A fire at the World Pie restaurant shut down Bridgehampton’s Main Street on Saturday morning and put the restaurant out of business not only for one of the busiest weekends of the year on the South Fork, but until mid-June at least.

The fire was called in to Southampton Town Police at 9:23 a.m., Sergeant William Kiernan said that morning. According to Bridgehampton Fire Department Chief Gary Horsburgh, the blaze ignited in the basement of the building at 2402 Montauk Highway, and firefighters had to cut holes in the floor for ventilation. The fire did not spread up to the main floor, though, Chief Horsburgh said.

The Southampton Town fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause. Chief Horsburgh said he expected a determination sometime next week.

Police said no injuries were reported. Bridgehampton Main Street was closed from Church Lane to Ocean Road for about two and a half hours. The Southampton and East Hampton fire departments assisted Bridgehampton at the scene, and the Sag Harbor Fire Department stood by at Bridgehampton’s firehouse on School Street.

World Pie owner Mike Mannino said this week that some prep workers and a chef were in the building at the time the fire broke out. Mr. Mannino said that if no one was there to catch it and make a call, the blaze most likely would have spread and taken the whole building down.

“It was big enough, and it was spreading. It took some time to get it out,” he said. “The smoke alone just wrecks it. The fire department was great, though, they were very careful.”

As for getting business back up and running again, Mr. Mannino said he has contractors and architects looking into what exactly needs to be replaced, as the basement, which is used for storage, sustained extensive smoke and water damage.

Mr. Mannino acknowledged that the timing of the fire was very inconvenient for business.

“Had it been January or February, it would have been a lot better. But luckily no one was hurt,” he said. “It’s one of the busiest weekends of the whole summer. It’s a lot. We’re going to be down about two weeks on top of that, easily.

“We’re hoping [to be back open] mid-June,” he added. “That would be ideal. If everything goes right, it’s possible.”
