Mercedes SUV Crashes Into Bridgehampton Carvel

Jun 15, 2011 11:33 AM

An SUV crashed through the front window of the Carvel ice cream store on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton at about 4:45 p.m. on Monday evening, according to Southampton Town Police Sergeant Michael Joyce.

Ellyn Tucker, 65, of East Hampton was parking her silver Mercedes-Benz ML350 at the ice cream store and mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake, Sgt. Joyce said this week. “She collided with a parked 2010 Lexus, glanced off that vehicle and collided with the building,” he said in an e-mail this week. No injuries were reported, and no charges were filed.

Southampton Town employees from the Building Department and fire marshal’s office also responded to the scene, Sgt. Joyce said.

Al Tyczkowski, a town fire marshal, assessed the situation on Monday. He said officials at the scene were able to safely remove the car from the building. “The front support pillar on the building was knocked out,” he said, adding that there was no danger of collapse.

“The damage to the car was minimal, probably some scrapes and scratches,” he added. “The car could’ve been driven away, but for safety purposes the car was towed away.”

The power in the store had to be shut off, because the car had crashed into nearby electrical outlets. The ice cream, Mr. Tyczkowski said, remained unharmed.

“No one was injured—and we were able to save all the ice cream,” he quipped. “We didn’t even lose a sno-cone.”

Interesting to see members not wearing the standard protective gear in all the photo's. Is it a "scene" or not??????

It's unfortunate that VOLUNTEERS have to spend more time worrying about who is goint to jam them up than doing thier job. When there was actually work to be done everyone was in gear. I am amazed that Mr.Blue from North Sea has soo much to say about Bridgehampton. Sounds like Mr. Blue isn't who he says he is.

I guess when you only drive 2 or 3 months out of the year, you kind of forget which one is the gas and which one is the brake. I wonder if anyone is giving odds as to whether or not the driver was on the phone at the time.

Wait a second... was there a person driving said vehicle, or did the ominous, gas-guzzling terror machine crash into the building on it's own? If so, we must remove all SUVs immediately as they will kill us all!!

All such witty remarks--not one concerned about whether anyone was hurt or commending our volunteers for taking time out of their day to serve our community and help someone in need. Would these comments had been so insensitive if the vehicle had been a Ford Focus?

I thought Carvel was a drive-thru. I guess not.

I also thought it was policy to wear certified and OSHA approved clothing on all calls. So where's the safety officer, who's in charge? come on Chief's of SHFD and SHVAC you know what all that training and all those tax $$$ dollars went for,

Just to clarify. This call is in Bridgehampton in which is served by the Bridgehampton Fire Department and not by the SHFD and SHVAC as mentioned above.
