UPDATE: Absentee Ballot Count Continues In East Hampton

Nov 21, 2011 5:42 PM

Suffolk County Board of Elections employees resumed counting absentee ballots from East Hampton Town on Monday morning, with results expected that afternoon.

However, party officials said close race could remain undecided for some time because campaign volunteers and lawyers have questioned the legitimacy of some absentee ballots. Those challenges will need to be reviewed by Board of Elections commissioners, they said.

The absentee ballots will decide the close race between incumbent East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson, a Republican, and his challenger, Zachary Cohen, an unaffiliated voter endorsed by Democrats. Mr. Wilkinson led Mr. Cohen by 177 votes after Election Day votes were counted.

Jeanne Frankl, chairwoman of the East Hampton Town Democratic Committee, said absentee, affidavit and unscanned ballots from four “large” districts remained to be counted on Monday, and technical challenges by Republicans were mounting. In a press release on Saturday, she said Democrats are “cautiously optimistic” the challenged ballots will eventually be accepted and benefit Mr. Cohen.

“Democrats believe that most, if not all of the challenges are unmerited and think it most likely that when the ballots are opened, Mr. Cohen will prevail,” she said.

Trace Duryea, chairwoman of the East Hampton Town Republican Committee, could not immediately be reached Monday morning.

As of last week, 799 East Hampton Town absentee ballots and 829 Southampton Town absentee ballots had been returned.

QUESTION to the B of E:

Why would you STOP counting East End Ballots on Saturday, START counting some other towns' ballots on that day, and then RESUME counting East End ballots on Monday?

We are a nation of instant communication.....ipads/iphones/email but we fall short in our ability to count absentee ballots in a timely manner. Absolutely insane. What a backwards process. What an embarrasment. The whole system needs an overhaul.

I agree and while we are at it we need a law to make checking Identification at the polling place mandatory

"Of course the Republicans passing these laws never acknowledge their real purpose, which is to turn away from the polls people who are more likely to vote Democratic, particularly the young, the poor, the elderly and minorities. They insist that laws requiring government identification cards to vote are only to protect the sanctity of the ballot from unscrupulous voters. Cutting back on early voting, which has been popular among working people who often cannot afford to take off from their jobs ...more

Sounds to me like they lost count and had to start over again...I hate when that happens to me.

... maybe it's just me , but how can Linda Kabot be involved in the counting of any ballots (scroll through the photos)?
By William Rodney (561), southampton on Nov 19, 11 2:19 PM
Because she is a sad, pathetic, vindictive whiner who wants to try to take votes away from ATH so that she can claim her loss was not as bad as it actually was. The voters have now overwhelmingly rejected you twice, Ms. Kabot and your own party does not even want you. Leave us alone.

Hey Hazel, there is one serious lesson history should have taught you:

Mr. Z You say Fickle? Maybe hypocritical as well - When the Democrats had control over Congress and they imposed an unpopular health care overhaul on us they told us "Elections have consequences." When the electorate punished their disregard for it's will by installing a tide of opposition, suddenly it was about compromise. I thought elections had consequences? Wake up. We the People want you the government to stop spending money on entitlements

Now, all of a sudden, they matter.

We can use all the words we want, but they all add up to the same thing: BS.

By Mr. Z (11847), North Sea on Nov 20, 11 12:23 PM
I actually would like to see Rubio run.
I do think Mr Cain would do a fine job but lets face it... You can't become the President with such a lack of working knowlege on foreign policy...Then again Barry did ? But he had the help of massive left wing media bias.
So I suppose the smartest man in the room is Speaker Gingrich and I would so love to see him debate Barry. Anyone except that wooden Indian Romney that the left and RINOs keep forcing down our throat

SH Press, can you please give us an explination as to why Linda Kabot was there counting ballots? Doesn't that seem wildly innapropriate?
By Nature (2966), Hampton Bays on Nov 21, 11 10:26 AM
Ms. Kabot, pictured with former Democratic Chairman Neil Tiger, was in Yaphank inspecting votes, not counting them. The counting was performed by Board of Elections officials.

Progress now aka faux Razza, If you are referring to Mr. Cain as the Idiot, I suggest you do some research. His resume is quite impressive. I can see why a person might not be comfortable handing him the keys to the country but the man is far from an Idiot.
I would list his accomplishments here but Bill may rule that I have deviated to far of coarse for this thread.
By joe hampton (3461), south hampton on Nov 21, 11 1:18 PM
joe, you may find it comforting to think that one less person on this planet finds you as obnoxious as "faux razza", but, I can assure you that, although I do not share his mind, I do share his sentiment.

By the way, I find your Freudian spelling error extremely revealing. Yes, Cain's list of accomplishments are TOO coarse for these boards, or any other for that matter.

When Gingrich said over the weekend in reference to the occupy movement " It starts with the premise that we all owe them everything," And the movement's sense of entitlement is a "symptom how much the left has collapsed as a moral system in this country, and why you need to reassert something as simple as saying, 'Go get a job right after you take a bath,'" Thats when he won me over.

In related news, the abacus being used to keep track of the hand counted, hand drawn ballots jammed. As soon as the sun comes out to shed some light on the sun dial, look to the sky. The poll surveyed New Jersey residents about the uprisings in Egypt and the Middle East, and where they get their news sources.
