Hampton Bays Resident Jeremy Brandt Set To Challenge Fred Thiele In November Election

Jun 6, 2012 1:28 PM

Jeremy Brandt, 36, a Sag Harbor native and resident of Hampton Bays, has been tapped to challenge 2nd District State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. in November’s election.

Mr. Brandt was endorsed this week by both the Suffolk County Republican Party and the Suffolk County Conservative Party, of which he has been a member since 1994, he said Tuesday. Due to redistricting, the 2nd District seat will become the 1st District starting in January.

Mr. Brandt, who lives with his wife, Melissa, and his son, Bradley, 2, owns and operates a small plumbing corporation called Brandt Plumbing. He graduated from Pierson High School in 1994. It is his first time running for public office.

He said he wants to bring the voice of the local people to the Assembly.

“If you spend so much time in Albany, you lose touch,” Mr. Brandt said. “There is no way not to. My generation’s voice needs to be heard.”

After working under Donald Scarlato as a plumbing contractor for 12 years, Mr. Brandt launched his own plumbing firm and has been in business since. He said that experience, along with his experience working with pool companies when he was younger, has taught him the difficulties of the small business world and can help him better represent the people of the Assembly district, which encompasses the entire South Fork of Long Island and a portion of Brookhaven Town. His wife works for Prudential Real Estate and waitresses part time. Mr. Brandt said they moved to Hampton Bays six years ago after it became difficult for them to afford living in Sag Harbor.

“I am the district,” Mr. Brandt said. “I’m the small painting company, the small electric company, the small contractors. I live that every day to try to make ends meet, and it’s harder and harder. I have to do my best for people like us.”

Suffolk County Conservative Party Chairman Edward M. Walsh Jr. called Mr. Brandt a great conservative.

“In this day and age, when taxes and spending are out of control, who better to go to Albany and try to fix that mess?” Mr. Walsh said of Mr. Brandt’s candidacy. “He’s an energetic, bright young guy, and we’re hoping he does really well.”

Mr. Thiele has held the Assembly seat since 1995. Neither he nor Suffolk County Republican Party Chairman John Jay LaValle returned calls seeking comment.

Operating a successful business in a state with one of the most difficult business climates speaks volumes about his competence in the real world.

As anyone in business knows, the dismal quality of education in this country means that only a fool would equate a degree with intelligence.

Where did he go to college? What does that matter? Bush went to Yale, Obama went to Harvard. Look at the mess we are in. Look at the college misfits at Occupy. I' m 6 credits away from my masters, how would that qualify me more to run for office? Sorry, but that 's a dumb question.

In my experience, it's usually people who have accomplished the least in the real world who put the most weight on paper credentials.

Let's hope he gets the support he needs. Time for Theile to move on - he has been double dipping on the taxpayers dime for too long (Assemblyman and Sag Harbor Village Attorney).

So the Republicans will run a member of the Conservative Party and the Democrats will run a member of the Independence Party. Anybody notice anything wrong with this picture?

Great news!!! Perhaps there will be a voice of reason and a focus on representing
ALL the citizens within this assembly district!

Looks like we finally have a true conservative to run against a worn out, rubber stamping liberal. Thank you for running! We need someone with a backbone and integrity to lead, not follow.

Someone might want to tell Mr. Brandt that he will be running for the 1st Assembly Disrtict. The 2nd assembly District is now the the North Fork.

The error was The Press's, not Mr. Brandt's. The story has been corrected to reflect that due to redistricting, the 2nd District will become the 1st District as of January 1.

I asked a simple question - don't read into it and get all bent out of shape. I am anxious to hear what he has to say - as I said, he is an interesting candidate.

RF- did your responses above come from fortune cookies?

I will not be supporting this young man, but I'm glad that a small businessman will be running against Assemblyman Thiele. We need more young people to step up and get in the arena. I wonder, though, if he realizes how many small business tax cuts/credits have been passed or proposed by President Obama.

Congrats on the decision Jeremy. I know my family and I will be behind you. Good Luck.
