Bishop And Altschuler Debate In Bridgehampton, Focus On Economy

Oct 16, 2012 10:08 AM

Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Bishop and Republican businessman Randy Altschuler will face off in Bridgehampton tonight at a second congressional debate hosted by The Press News Group and the Times/Review News Group of Riverhead.

The debate will take place at the Bridgehampton School at 7 p.m. The first half of the 90-minute-long event will focus on jobs and the economy. The second half of the debate will be open to general questions.

The debate is free and open to the public. Those interested can submit questions to questions@27east.com.

The debate will be moderated by Joe Shaw, the executive editor of The Press News Group, publishers of The Southampton Press Eastern Edition, The Southampton Press Western Edition and The East Hampton Press newspapers, as well as 27east.com.

It will be simulcast on Southampton public radio station WPPB 88.3 FM.

The series of debates began on September 27, when both newspaper groups cosponsored a debate in Riverhead. It will conclude on Thursday, October 25, when the two newspaper groups will cosponsor another debate with the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons. That debate will take place at 7 p.m. at the Westhampton Beach High School on Lilac Road in Westhampton Beach.

I'm sorry I did not see this earlier, there is a question I would have loved to put to the candidates tonight and those at Hofstra tomorrow: Ideally a Constitutional Convention would require all legislation requiring an expenditure of funds to specify the source of those funds. Absent that, it is obvious that government at all levels has failed to recognize that principal. Candidates often make promises to add expenditures or reduce revenues without regard to the financial equation of the budget. ...more

This morning, Washington Post & ABC released their latest poll of the presidential race. Naturally, they find Obama leading Romney by 3 points, 49-46. This is similar to their last poll, which found Obama leading by 2, 49-47. Similar, but very, very different. Their last poll had a D+3 sample. Today, though, to keep Obama where he was, they had to juice the sample to D+9. So, WaPo's poll is based on an unrealistic best-case scenario for Democrat turnout, and Obama is still under 50%. Doom.

If you think people in 1953 were paying a 90% tax rate you are sorely mistaken. Average household income was about 4k a year and it was a marginal tax rate that didn't go into effect until 300k. That's the equivilant of over 3 million in income by today's standard. Why is it you feel the need to curse.
By razza5350 (1911), East Hampton on Oct 17, 12 7:54 PM
And that dollar was worth what compared to today?

38 cents, compared to todays 5 cents by comparison. That's a huge percentage drop in buying power, ain't it?

As far as a "curse word" goes, in this language we call English there are "dirty" words which are reserved for emphasis, or intensity. It is my genuine hope my use of them now and then does not cheapen them.

On Friday, Politico reported that the Obama campaign was planning to revisit the issue of Romney's tax returns. For ten days, since the first debate, the Obama campaign had been shedding its poll advantage. Revisiting this old issue was their response? I've said it for years, and even the president said it as the last word at the recent debate. Everyone should play by the same rules. We don't have that in this country. There are two sets of rules. One for the privileged, the other set for those who are not.

By scoring big on the economy, gas prices, and Libya, Romney continued his victorious string of debate wins. He looked more presidential than Obama did and showed himself to be an articulate, capable, attractive, compassionate leader with sound ideas.
Obama came over as boorish and Biden-esque. He did not learn from his Vice President's mistakes. When a president gets into a bar room brawl, he loses his dignity and his aura, key assets for an incumbent. ...more

With the polls moving against President Obama both nationally and in the swing states, all the pressure is on him in tonight’s debate to project American strength on foreign policy. Polls show that in the aftermath of the devastating murders of our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, the American people are interested in a Reaganesque foreign policy. And Obama’s foreign policy is anything but.

Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: “I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. Looking forward to the President's reelection. I think last night's debate sealed it. Romney was way off his game. CBS Poll was 53% to 23% in favor of Obama. The only one that was close was CNN 48-40, in favor of Obama, but they admitted most of those who were polled were republicans, so CBS seems right on target.

"In a survey by CBS News, 53% awarded the debate to Obama, to 23% for Republican Mitt Romney and 24% undecided."

Oct 24, 12 12:46 PM appended by Mr. Z
An initial e-mail was sent while the attack was still underway, and another that arrived two hours later -- sent from a State Department address to various government agencies including the executive office of the president -- identified Ansar al-Sharia as claiming responsibility for the attack on its Facebook page and on Twitter. The group denied responsibility the next day. However, the e-mails raise further questions about the seeming confusion on the part of the Obama administration to determine the nature of the September 11 attack that left U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead. Two White House officials, speaking on condition of not being identified on Wednesday, said the government e-mails about the attack were not an intelligence assessment. They also noted that there was conflicting information about Ansar al-Sharia denying responsibility. "They were a part of the many different reports we were receiving that day," one of the White House officials said of the e-mails. "There are always multiple and conflicting reports in the initial hours of an attack. That's why you have an investigation."

Greg Palast: Mitt Romney's Bailout Bonanza

Romney & Company Shipped Almost Every Single Delphi UAW Job to China

Of the twenty-nine Delphi plants operating in the United States when the hedge funders began buying up control, only four remain, with not a single union production worker. Romney’s “job creators” did create jobs—in China, where Delphi now produces the parts used by GM and other major automakers here and abroad. Delphi is now incorporated overseas, ...more
Oct 25, 12 9:32 AM appended by Mr. Z
Altogether, in direct and indirect payouts, the government padded these investors’ profits handsomely. The Treasury allowed GM to give Delphi at least $2.8 billion of funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) to keep Delphi in business. GM also forgave $2.5 billion in debt owed to it by Delphi, and $2 billion due from Singer and company upon Delphi’s exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The money GM forgave was effectively owed to the Treasury, which had by then become the majority owner of GM as a result of the bailout. Then there was the big one: the government’s Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation took over paying all of Delphi’s retiree pensions. The cost to the taxpayer: $5.6 billion. The bottom line: the hedge funds’ paydays were made possible by a generous donation of $12.9 billion from US taxpayers.

Ummm, Romney is one.

In fact, he's an artist.

In this thing we call "Language Arts", there is a category called profanity. It is intended as a reserved group of words to express things that exceed the nominal capacity of every day vocabulary to connotate one's passionate feelings regarding a person, place, or thing. Only the most self-righteous, pious, incontrovertibly holier than thou, pompous a** could possibly fault a man for expressing himself when nothing else will do.

What the Koch brothers tried to do in North Carolina was beyond reproach.

They actually tried to resurrect "de facto" segregation by packing the school board with their funded candidates. Even resurrected the phrase "forced busing".

As if the current state of "de pecuniae" segregation wasn't bad enough.

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government ...more

I feel this bears repeating:

The Interstate System? Eisenhower, and a generation of America built that.

Railroads? Robber Barons, cheap Chinese labor, and the blood of thousands built that, while a lack of security allowed for all those deaths at the hands of poor working conditions, outlaws, and indian raids while the "fat cats" pocketed vast sums of wealth.

Public Transportation? You didn't build that, generations of Americans did with tax dollars ALMOST EVERYONE paid ...more

Nope. LIPA disappoints another day. I'm on battery, with the cellphone tethered to the laptop, conserving gas for the generator. It's better than wasting an hour of the day in line for gasoline...

Phil it is your desperation that is showing, The facts are the facts O claims he will reduce the deficit by 4 trillion but it is already at 16 trillion due to his own addition of 5 trillion to the deficit, so he will not even reduce the deficit for the amount he caused. But we have been here before, He promised to reduce the deficit in half and he doubled it. So by Obama-talk that must mean that Obama will increase the deficit by 10 trillion.
Time to flush the national toilet!

This was great:

"Hurricane Sandy is a perfect, microcosmic example of America's attitude toward government. We have millions of people who, most of the year, are ready to bash anyone who accepts government aid as a parasitic welfare queen, but the instant the water level rises a few feet too high in their own neighborhoods, those same folks transform into little Roosevelts, full of plaudits for the benefits of a strong state.

The truth is, nobody, be he rich or poor, wants his ...more

And if it's not outright bailouts or guarantees keeping the rich rich, it's selective regulation and carefully-carved-out protections from competition – like the bans on drug re-importation or pharmaceutical price negotiation for Medicare that are keeping the drug companies far richer than they would be, in the pure free-market paradise their CEOs probably espouse at dinner parties.

Why should the IBEW have any thing to say at all about who is working on the power problem??!! There are plenty of non-union linemen and electrical workers doing a fantastic job right now in our area. Gos help us all if getting our basic infrastructure up and running depends on kissing union azz!
Local 84: If the government got out of the way, the economy would improve and there would be more jobs. If you worked, you would understand this most basic concept. Too much time on the dole.

Maybe because they are the International Brotherhood of ELECTRICAL WORKERS? Maybe because they are the most qualified to deal with what is going on?

Transmission voltage is NOT house voltage. Your average downed wire is 13,800 volts, not 240v, and is normally not overcurrent protected. There are only disconnects. Linework is potentially LETHAL, and NO ONE who is less than the absolutely 100% qualified and experienced should be working on restoration.

If there are non-union ...more

Unions served a purpose at one time, that time has LONG passed! Why should we, the consumers , be forced to pay union wages for work performed on our power system? A non-union company could do the same work more efficiently at less cost to the consumer than a union company. Hell, non union companies let an employee do more than one job, a line man can be a flag waver of drive a truck or dig a ditch. A union won't let that happen, ever notice how it takes 6 guys to get a trench dug, one guy digging, ...more

Likely Voter Poll: Romney Ahead in Deep Blue Minnesota
Minnesota, the bluest of blue states, which has voted for the Democratic candidate in every election since 1976, is very much in play for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. Today, we got statistical confirmation that is the case via an American Future Fund poll.

The Presidential ballot in Minnesota is a dead heat.

Ohio: Romney Draws 30,000, Obama Draws 2800
4 Nov 2012, 7:17 AM PDT
As Chuck Todd and NBC release their juicy-juiced-juicery from a propagandist named Marist predicting Obama will nearly double his 2008 turnout advantage with a D+9 poll, in his first trip to Ohio since Hurricane Sandy, Mitt Romney attracted a jaw-dropping crowd of 30,000 at a rally Friday evening.

Mean while at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Ohio, President FailureTeleprompter drew a crowd of 2800.

Obama Attracting Smaller Crowds than McCain in ’08
Campaigning in Mentor, Ohio today, President Obama drew a crowd of 4,000. RNC research director Joe Pounder notes that, four years ago, John McCain drew a bigger ground to the same venue.
Ed Henry noticed the same thing.
This appears to be something of a trend. Last night, Mitt Romney drew 30,000 to a Cincinnati rally, while 2,800 people showed up to see President ...more

to 27dan:

Actually, that would be NBC/WSJ/Marist, CNN/Opinion Research, WeAskAmerica, Ohio Poll/Univ. of Cn., SurveyUSA, Gravis Marketing, PPP(D), CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac, PurpleStrategies, ARG - - - "or your lying eyes[.]"

Not sure what you're talking about with regard to a "D+9 poll", the NBC/WSJ/Marist poll gives President Obama a 6% lead.

Time for you to turn your attention away from depressing Ohio, 27dan, and refocus it on a state that will make you happy ... Utah!

I think 1,000 of 350 million is too small a sample, but Gallup says they have a good formula. Republicans being more likely to be Creationists (10,000 year hypothesis) is really no big surprise. And, also not surprisingly respondents with postgraduate education were less likely to be Creationists.

In U.S., 46% Hold Creationist View of Human Origins

Highly religious Americans most likely to believe in creationism
