The two candidates vying to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives this fall will meet in Amagansett on Wednesday, February 3, for the campaign season’s first debate.

Sponsored by the East Hampton Town Democratic Party, the debate will feature Anna Throne-Holst, the former Southampton Town supervisor from Noyac, and David Calone, a businessman and attorney from Brookhaven Town.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church on Montauk Highway—opposite the Amagansett Post Office at the far eastern end of the hamlet’s business district.

The pair are both seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, a Republican from Brookhaven Town, in his first reelection bid since winning the 1st Congressional District seat in 2012. He defeated six-term Democratic incumbent Tim Bishop of Southampton in 2014.

Mr. Calone, the former chairman of the Suffolk County Planning Commission, recently announced his endorsement by most of the East End’s sitting elected Democrats, including East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell and Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming, who sat on the Southampton Town Board with Ms. Throne-Holst. Ms. Throne-Holst, who served as a councilwoman in Southampton for two years and as the town’s supervisor for six, has been championed by some in the state and national ranks of the Democratic Party, including Mr. Bishop. This week she announced that her campaign has raised more than $1 million since she announced her candidacy last spring.

Voting in the congressional primary elections will take place on June 28 throughout the state.

The debate will be moderated by Charles Hitchcock, a former dean of Southampton College, where Mr. Bishop was the longtime provost. Mr. Hitchcock is also a former chairman of the East Hampton Town Democratic Party.

I can not wait to be there. The people need to see why we should be supporting real democrats and not these phony independence candidates. Go Calone, do our party proud again.

This should be interesting...

I predict Calone will advance to the general.

I guess ATH tapped all of the people she "assisted" during her 8 years on Hampton Road to donate to her war chest.

In the end, I hope Lee keeps his seat. He's doing a good job.

What is wrong with this picture?

According to the article, "Mr. Calone . . . recently announced his endorsement by most of the East End’s sitting elected Democrats, including East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell and Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming . . . "

Does this mean that -- after 8 years of being on the Southampton Town Board -- Ms. Throne-Holst's neighboring EH Town Board members have a bad taste in their mouths about her? So bad as to Dis her in this ...more

All these folks are right, even Draggerman. I say this though I sort of doubt Draggerman's standing to weigh in on a Democratic primary race given how downright vicious he's been toward Dem candidates on the Town level. But maybe I'm just being cranky.

Take a look at who's backing whom here. Anna Throne-Holst has the support of many people of wealth and celebrity, people whose lives are very different from that of the average voter in the 1st Congressional District. She has been endorsed ...more

are these democrats going to help protect my constitutional rights? My right to bear arms that shall not be infringed? What are they going to do about the national and international events going on? I didn't think so...Vote for Lee Zelden!

I don't think the congressman to Israel is running in the democratic primary.

Rumor has it that the only one happier than Zeldin when he beat Bishop was Throne-Holst.

She was so happy she decided to switch from Indy to Dem.

The big difference to me, and I know both of them quite well, is that one cares about people and the other only cares about herself. So sure whenever the public good coincides with what is good for Anna the public benefits but if the choice is public good or Anna good - its a sure bet Anna good is gonna beat public good.

And ...more

Anna does, however, have Jay's endorsement. She failed on getting much more out of the East End.

Turkey Bridge, I really wish that ATH would be a shoe in for your primary. I doubt she would last long against Lee. And she really wouldn't survive Washington.

My Sagaponack Dem friends love her...

We remember Sister Jackie Walsh, killed by a hit-and-run driver three years and seven months ago today.

A dark cloud hanging over the former Supervisor's track record IMO.

Rest in Peace.
