Suffolk County Independence Party Endorses Calone For Congress

Mar 8, 2016 3:52 PM

The Suffolk County Chairman of the Independence Party this week endorsed David Calone to be the party’s next candidate for congressman from the 1st Congressional District, over Republican incumbent U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin and Democratic primary opponent Anna Throne-Holst.

The endorsement came from party chairman Frank MacKay, who is also the founder of the Independence Party in New York State.

“His background makes him the best candidate in this race to fight to create jobs, protect our environment and deliver the results that Long Island families need,” Mr. MacKay was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Calone campaign on Tuesday. “As a resident of the 1st Congressional District myself, I would be proud to call David Calone my Congressman.”

The move may be something of a surprise because Ms. Throne-Holst was an Independence Party member for most of her 8 years in Southampton Town Hall and one of the party’s first major officeholders.

“I didn’t know this was coming and I was surprised, but what the county Independence Party does is up to the leadership,” said Ms. Throne-Holst’s successor as Southampton supervisor, Jay Schneiderman, who is also registered with the Independence Party. “I support Anna, but I don’t think people voting in the Democratic primary care who the Independence Party supports.”

Only those registered as Democrats may vote in the Democratic Primary in New York State.

Ms. Throne-Holst shrugged off the slight by her former party leader, noting her declared support from Mr. Schneiderman and local Independence Party leader Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr.

“Democrats know I am the progressive with the long track record of fighting and delivering to level the playing field for families and taxpayers,” she said. “I’m the only one who can beat Lee Zeldin in the general [election].”

Too little too late if you ask me. Because the Democrat leadership of Gordon Herr and George Lynch keep putting non Democrats in office on the Democrat line we have empowered people like Anna Throne Holst. Now David Calone is forced to primary, spend precious campaign money and lose focus from the real fight Zeldin.

On the other hand (we have 5 fingers no) it gives Mr. Calone the opportunity to make himself better known.

And the addition of the Independence Party line gives him added ammunition to be the Democratic Party candidate, since were he to lose the primary and step down the likelihood is that the Independence Party would then endorse Mr Zeldin.

It also sends another statement about how those who have had to work with the former Supervisor feel about her.

The fact that the Party that sent ATH to Hampton Road is now endorsing her competition speaks legions of our former Supervisor.

Does Anna have any support? Other than her band of misguided Sagaponack leftist Millionaires.

Tonight we remember Sister Jackie Walsh whose hit-and-run death -- 3 years and 8 months ago today -- was never fully explained by the former supervisor or the SHT PD. Who was the actual driver, what is the status of the investigation now, why have the investigative materials not been made public?

Rest in Peace.

Independence Party chief Frank Mackay has been so disliked for so long around here that my first reaction was to think his nod is about equivalent to a David Duke endorsement on the national level. Then I thought no, Mackay is just exercising common sense in looking at both candidates' backgrounds and finding Dave Calone better suited, both to run against Lee Zeldin and to represent us in Congress.

As NTiger observes, we see once again that those who know ATH best are not with her. Besides ...more
