Stop And Shop To Buy King Kullen Stores On Long Island

Jan 8, 2019 12:49 PM

Stop & Shop announced on Friday that the grocery chain will absorb King Kullen Grocery Store Co., which includes 32 supermarkets and five Wild by Nature stores throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, as well as the soon-to-be defunct King Kullen corporate office in Bethpage.

It’s unclear what will happen with King Kullen stores on the East End, or their employees, particularly in Hampton Bays, which already has a Stop & Shop store in addition to a King Kullen and a Wild By Nature, all within two miles of each other. King Kullen has stores in Eastport and Bridgehampton, as well.

Stop & Shop officials did not say whether they plan to close any stores, and have declined to outline their plans for the takeover. Jennifer Brogan, Stop & Shop’s director of communications, said in an email on Friday that “Stop & Shop will evaluate the stores and make these decisions in the near future.”

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2019. A price for the deal was not disclosed.

Hampton Bays resident Frank Gaffney took to social media on Monday to express his concerns, noting that the possibility of having three Stop & Shops in Hampton Bays is absurd. “It seems buying King Kullen just to close them wouldn’t make for good business,” he wrote.

In an interview on Monday, Terri Gann of East Quogue added to that sentiment, noting that “monopoly is not good.”

“I prefer a smaller, cozier store,” she said. “A chain the size of Stop & Shop—it’s hard to create that comfortable feel of a good old-fashioned grocery store.”

King Kullen opened its first store in 1930, according to the chain’s co-president, Brian Cullen. “As a family-owned and operated business, we are very proud of our heritage and extremely grateful to all of our associates and customers for their support over the years,” he said in the press release from Stop & Shop on Friday. “We are confident the Stop & Shop brand will carry on our legacy and service in the region.”

In the release, Stop & Shop President Mark McGowan praised the Long Island-based supermarket chain for its 88-year commitment to “excellent customer service.”

“King Kullen is a well respected grocery chain,” he said. “We look forward to bringing our quality, selection and value to more communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties.”

the southampton stop and puke is disgusting and way over priced because they have no competition.go to shop rite in riverhead to see what a supermarket should look like

Another empty store in Hampton Bays, that mall will look deserted and the remaining stores will suffer from lack of shoppers. What a shame, and all those employees who have given many years to one day have a retirement with a pension.

Worked there back in the day and actually drank a six of two of the stuff. 89 cents a six if I recall. Worse than all of the other cheap beers I drank in great quantities at the time, Schmidts, Rupert Knickerbocker among others.

King Kullen has been owned and operated by the Cullen family here on Lung Guyland since 1930.

Stop and Shop is a wholly owned susidiary of Dutch Company Ahold.

Please shop at your friendly, local IGA or other food markets where the owners are local people who care about our community.

Great loss to Southampton. Look terrible inside, isles are clogged wit stuff. Can't pass a cart ... Fish market is better now, smelled before. With the Hamptons fish prices, it is a bargin.
They have to clean it up...

you're taking your life in your hands buying seafood at stop and vomit. many times there has been a nasty smell coming from meat section and the roof was leaking.

Wegmans is from Westwrn New York, Rochester area. It’s still family owned...
By Draggerman (875), Southampton on Jan 7, 19 9:16 PM
Shinnecock Indian Nation should allow one giant Wegmanns to be built on there West Woods property in Hampton Bays with exits East and West built to connect with Sunrise Hwy ! It would be an awesome place for all the east end to shop on there way in from the City and would alleviate so much in town congestion in Southampton and Hampton Bays

Stop and shop in southampton feels like looting during a riot. If I want to get scowled at by a crowd of ex cons, misfits and unstable zombies- I’ll try the low stakes tables at a dumpy casino in Jersey.

I actually thing to Stop and Shop in East Hampton is in much better condition than it was when it was A&P and then Walbaums.

I also agree with Brian Williams and I urge all the east end shoppers to stop shopping at the huge out of state monopoly shop stop and shop.
Any one that lives in the Riverhead area should shop at the new shop rite.
It is clean friendly and has more selection than stop and shop could ever offer
The prices are also the best in the area.
What was the Cullen family thinking after making there fortune on Long Islanders.
It must be the greedy new generations of Cullens

The news that Wild by nature and King Kullen May close due to Stop & Shop purchase is very upsetting. As a east quogue summer resident I do all I can to advoid S&S, I usually shop at wild by nature which is just down the road and if I need everyday items I drive past S&S and shop at KK

By Dormar (1), East quogue on Jan 11, 19 7:56 AM
When it comes to groceries, there is no need to buy local. Boxed dot com is a great site for bulk items along with BJs. Actually, you can't buy BJs there.
By SlimeAlive (1144), Southampton on Jan 11, 19 8:44 AM
Uncle Giuseppe's would be a terrific addition to our area! Incredible stores...check them out in Smithtown, Melville, Massapequa and more....
By Taz (563), East Quogue on Jan 12, 19 12:47 PM
The conditions at KK in BH are a stark comparison to S&S SH, SH has the worst produce and limited selection - no soy milk , no butcher available, same 3 lobsters for months . Better to close the SH S&S and lets have a Wegmans, or Uncle G's since the restaurants are no longer affordable .

The Hamptons on a whole is on a trajectory that I don't like. Every town and village has more and more vacant businesses or summer only businesses that locals don't even patronize during the summer. Businesses that people need to uses on a daily basis year round can't sustain themselves. Eventually, Riverhead will be the only answer for everyone east of Riverhead. The Hamptons will be a retirement housing community and Riverhead will be the shopping district. If you want choice, it will come with ...more
By deelove (139), Bridgehampton on Jan 12, 19 1:51 PM
There used to be three Subway sandwich shops east of Hampton Bays. Now there are none east of Moriches. Something practical, that people could use on a daily basis doesn't exist, but there are a dozen acai bowl shops that will be out of business in 6 months and then something else even less practical will open.

King Kullen is a better store. Better produce, better meat, better international foods. Long live the King!

Stop &Shop is owned by the Queen of England and so is Shell Gass Station, we are taken over by foreign Nationalist , eager to lower the population. IN FACT THE QUEENS HUSBAND, PUBLICLY HOPED FOR A. REAL GOOD PANDIMC TO HELP LOWER THE POPULATION ! We are on barrow ed time, wise up,stand up ,people.

Stop & Shop's parent company, Ahold Delhaize, is a publicly traded corporation.

That means that you can own some too, if you'd like.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (5931), HAMPTON BAYS on Jan 18, 19 5:55 AM
STOP & SHOP (The Queen of England ), is not U.S.'s Parent and the Stock market is a PONZI scheme for sure to crash soon, all the while debasing the value of the U.S. debt. derivatives that are really only worth 3 cents for every worthless 1 dollar debt certificate. To buy into the queen's corporation and subsequent Parent Corporation's are stealing the working stiff's sweat, blood & tear's, only to manipulate and steal, wealth from the masses.
Is this your JOB with (5097) trollish responses? ...more

No, it's my entertainment. People stare at a TV for hours a day and nobody bats an eye but I read and write responses on a message board for fun and everyone loses their minds.

Anyway, if my time on public transit taught me anything it's to never engage crazy. Au revoir!
