Lee Zeldin, Ilhan Omar Trade Barbs Following Subcommittee Appointments

U.S. Congressman Lee Zeldin. PRESS FILE
Feb 5, 2019 1:01 PM

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin was appointed on January 29 to serve as ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, identifying him as the highest-ranking Republican position on the committee.

While he celebrated his new role, he wasn’t as thrilled to learn who else was being appointed to join him on the committee that day.

In a tweet announcing his new position, he criticized the Democratic Party for appointing to the same subcommittee U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Muslim Democratic congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district, which set off a pointed exchange between the two.

“Just learned Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar was also put on this committee w oversight of US foreign policy. Crazy to watch what House Dems are empowering/elevating,” read Mr. Zeldin’s tweet.

The tweet came just over an hour after he spoke in an interview about his plans to work toward bipartisan progress on the committee.

Ms. Omar, a Somali-American, replied the following day, “Don’t mind him, he is just waking up to the reality of having Muslim women as colleagues who know how to stand up to bullies! It’s gonna be fun watching him lose his marbles”—which quickly prompted Mr. Zeldin to then accuse her of being an ISIS sympathizer.

“Those poor innocent ISIS fighters & Palestinian terrorists right? Give me a break! That’s a problem no matter your religion or gender Ilhan. Your anti-Semitic & anti-Israel hate is strong & wrong & those terrorists have US blood on their hands as well,” Mr. Zeldin, who is Jewish, tweeted back.

In a later email to The Press, he continued to condemn House Democrats and Ms. Omar.

“It’s crazy that House Democrats are elevating a Member of Congress to oversee U.S. foreign policy who has advocated for leniency of ISIS fighters, has been the highest-profile U.S. government defender recently of Venezuelan President [Nicolas] Maduro, supports the BDS movement targeting Israel, and has tweeted out ‘Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel,’” he wrote.

“House Democrats should not be empowering those positions and that rhetoric,” he went on. “This month, the House of Representatives nearly unanimously condemned White Supremacy and Rep. Steve King was stripped of his committee seats. Why won’t Democrats take similar action with the hate in their ranks? Instead, they give it a larger voice and greater platform, which is unacceptable.”

He had also attacked Ms. Omar in a previous tweet on January 17, when she joined the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in which he said that Democrats were empowering antisemitic and anti-Israel sentiments by giving her a seat. Additionally, Mr. Zeldin has been promoting a new resolution condemning antisemitism that calls out Ms. Omar by name.

On Thursday, January 31, Ms. Omar retweeted an article about their recent Twitter exchanges from the news site The Raw Story. She referenced lyrics from a popular Ariana Grande song, writing, “Thank you, next,” and tagging Mr. Zeldin’s twitter account.

The exchange shifted and ultimately ended on February 1, after Mr. Zeldin tweeted her an antisemitic voicemail sent to his office from an anonymous person who called him “worse than Hitler.” Ms. Omar agreed with him that it was hateful message. “I too am flooded with bigoted voicemails and calls every day,” she tweeted, and proceeded to invite him to her office to discuss ways to combat religious discrimination over Somali tea.

Ms. Omar did not return requests for comment.

Great appointment, to bad he’s in the minority. How come he never got this when the republicans were in majority?

Because the Republicans, unlike the Democrats, rotate their committee appointments, one of the reasons a lot of Republicans didn't run for re-election; they were going to lose their committee seats. Democrats on the other hand make the appointments last until you die, lose, or are indicted.

The left put the MN Muslim Ilhan Omar was put onto the same committee. I hope Lee highlights the radical hijacking of the democratic party. Ilhan Omar has just called for leniency for the Americans caught and accused of fighting US forces on behalf of ISIS. Liberal Amerikkka.

Radical?!HA! C'mon, admit it: Democrats and Republicans are merely 2 wings of the same vulture. Both parties are whores of Wall St., Banksters, Big Oil, Big Insurance, Big Pharma, the Prison Industrial Complex and the Military Industrial Complex. Neither party gives a hoot about the poor, the working class, the lower middle class or anyone who can't afford a $250./plate fundraiser.
We really do need to just scrap it all and start over.

Not particularly newsworthy, in light of the fact that Zeldin has been a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee since 2015 (as the article notes) and this is but a subcommittee of that body.

Nevertheless, it is still bad news that a Likudnik has been assigned a role, however inconsequential, in the determination of U.S. foreign policy.

For those confused by the Right’s embellishment of the NY Abortion law.

THE FACTS!

It Legalizes abortions after 24 weeks IF a woman’s health is at risk or the Fetus is NOT viable.

Women who after 6 months decide, 'hey I don’t want a baby,' are NOT permitted to get an abortion!

Just an additional but pertinent fact, the RCC has never forbidden abortion when the life of the mother is in jeopardy regardless of the stage of the pregnancy.

Fred: You call Trump a loser? You have got to be kidding. He is a billionaire, the President of the United States, has a wonderful family, he is physically fit, healthy, energetic, has a gorgeous wife, doesn't smoke or drink, etc. What is your definition of a loser? I have one: Someone who is blinded by hate.

Wall, schmall. Again, who cares?

Supreme Court Justices don't just change the law...they change our values. Ginsburg will be gone soon and look for Trump to fill that spot and possibly up to 2 more before his EIGHT year term is up. And fill them he will. With people who will bring our values back to where they should be and we'll finally have an overwhelming majority of justices THAT CARE ABOUT AND WILL ABIDE BY THE CONSTITUTION!!!

Numbers and statistics can be funny, and can easily be manipulated. The Dow dropped 17.4% between election day 2008 (9,625) and Inauguration Day 2009 (7,949.) The Dow increased 8.15% from election day 2016 (18,333) to Inauguration Day 2017 (19,827.) So the numbers from election day would be quite different in both cases. The 2 year increase was 20.3% from election day 11/4/08 (9,625) to 12/31/10 (11,578) while the 2 year increase was 27.2% from election day 11/7/16 (18,333) to 12/31/18 (23,327.) ...more

M2 Nov. 12, 2018: 14.2 trillion dollars

Didn't Barry Goldwater's nomination as the Republican presidential candidate in 1964 hinge on his opposition to civil rights?

Didn't black delegates stage a walk-out during the 1964 Republican National Convention based on those views?

It's true that a majority of Republicans in congress voted for the Civil Rights Act, just as it's true that only Republicans nominated a candidate opposed to its passage.

Even if it was purely a position in favor of small government, it was a position supported by racists and resulted in the walkout by black delegates at the convention, right?

In 2015 Ted Cruz said his $100,000 student loan was paid off "just a few years ago". This from Pres. Obama: "Michelle and I, we're only where we are today because scholarships and student loans gave us a shot at a great education. And we know a little bit about trying to pay back student loans, too, because we didn't come from a wealthy family. So we each graduated from college and law school with a mountain of debt. And even though we got good jobs, we barely finished paying it off just before I was elected to the U.S. Senate. ... I mean, I was in my 40s when we finished paying off our debt. And we should have been saving for Malia and Sasha by that time. But we were still paying off what we had gotten, and we were luckier because most of the debt was from law school. Our undergraduate debt was not as great because tuition had not started shooting up as high."

Do you make over $10M per year?

Because only income over $10M per year would be taxed at 70%

To put it another way, if you earned $10,000,001.00 this year, only $1 would be taxed at the 70% rate, while the rest of your income would be subject to the current tax rates.

Trends Over the last 800,000 years atmospheric CO2 levels as indicated by the ice-core data have fluctuated between 170 and 300 parts per million by volume (ppmv), corresponding with conditions of glacial and interglacial periods. The Vostok core indicates very similar trends. Prior to about 450,000 years before present time (BP) atmospheric CO2 levels were always at or below 260 ppmv and reached lowest values, approaching 170 ppmv, between 660,000 and 670,000 years ago. The highest pre-industrial value recorded in 800,000 years of ice-core record was 298.6 ppmv, in the Vostok core, around 330,000 years ago. Atmospheric CO2 levels have increased markedly in industrial times; measurements in year 2010 at Cape Grim Tasmania and the South Pole both indicated values of 386 ppmv, and are currently increasing at about 2 ppmv/year. NOTE***As of September 2017, CO2 levels exceeded 400 ppmv and have continued to rise.

Ilhan Omar's AIPAC tweet sparks condemnation, including from Chelsea Clinton

The substance of Ilhan Omar's remarks is that US foreign policy regarding Israel is hugely influenced by pro-Israeli special-interest groups, especially AIPAC, which manipulate Congress by arranging massive political contributions. Whether suggesting those donations affect decision-making is anti-semitic? My belief is that money has an impact in politics, whether it's AIPAC's money, or the NRA's, or Planned Parenthood's, so I don't see how that's anti-semitic.

It could also be argued that any forecast gains from the tax cuts have been thwarted by interest increases by the Federal Reserve - something that could not have been foreseen when the tax cuts were made.

Or, it's just the culmination of failed GOP policies and deficit spending for nearly forty years. Wars on a "credit card", and the first tax cuts in history during active warfare. By the GOP. Nothing was learned from the S&L scandal, and deregulation and a lack of policing in the name of the "free market" led to rampant malfeasance and fraud. By Po Boy (5299), Water Mill on Feb 13, 19 1:14 AM
Nope. And, timing is everything. Don't be so simple.

Democrats had one unified Congress since the 80s, during 1993-1994. The GOP held a unified Congress from 2003-2006. A GOP congress passed deregulation of the banking industry in 1999. Historically, Democrats presided over Congress during the best times the American "middle class" ever saw. The GOP has managed to destroy budget surpluses, screw the pooch, and blames everyone else. Deal with it.
By Mr. Z (11822), North Sea on Feb 13, 19 7:38 AM
No, a GOP congress DID NOT pass deregulation. Who do you think signed the 1999 deregulation into law? Yep, Bill Clinton.

No, it's not simple...yes, timing IS everything. It's why even attempting to set a standard to "the best times the American "middle class" ever saw" is asinine and contingent on how you define "the best times."

Correct, nyc511 was the first to engage with the question, as opposed to your repetition of "Omar is anti-semitic" over and over again without a hint of WHY you think that.

I don't think anyone should feel the need to apologize for taking anyone's money unless they know that the only reason they support particular policies is because of that money.

That scenario is called bribery and is an issue AOC recently highlighted: corruption is basically legal in the United States.

Speaker Pelosi merely pointed out the absence of an emergency at the border and cited our ACTUAL national gun violence emergency. She said nothing along the lines of your extrapolation. Further, our modern history is rife with constitutional gun control measures. In fact, the House just passed mandatory background check legislation this very day.

When Democrats are worrying about the best interests of a president they despise...

While it is self serving to the interests of Democrats, enabling illegal immigration is bad policy for the good of the Nation no matter what the circumstances.

By Po Boy (5299), Water Mill on Feb 15, 19 8:31 AM
Can you explain how the bill "enables illegal immigration"? My understanding is that DACA isn't part of the bill.

I'm not worried about Trump's best interests, I would legitimately love to see a veto.

The issue of the "landmines" within the bill has been fully documented outside CNN-circles.

I recommend you educate yourself on the particulars that include stipulations on approvals for "fencing" and incentives for illegals in the form of limitations placed on law enforcement.

You assume without knowing for certain there actually would be a veto.

I disagree that a veto or the inevitable override would "degrade the country" and unlike my opposition to the government shutdown, which hurt other people in addition to Trump's standing, I am in favor of the veto & override because it would ONLY hurt Trump's standing.

I'm confident the bill will become law, as it should, whether or not the president signs it.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8257), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 15, 19 11:44 AM
You think don't think increasing political discord in the United States degrades the country, huh?

Your opinion of the effects of the shutdown are not universally accepted just as that of your opinion of what the impact would be if an override would have taken place.

To your liking as evidenced by "as it should", the detrimental bill which included incentives for illegals and stipulations on border security has become law.

By Po Boy (5299), Water Mill on Feb 15, 19 12:03 PM
Oh good, Trump's not crazy and saw the writing on the wall, pun intended.

I think nonviolent political disagreement is a sign of a healthy democracy.

I certainly don't need my opinion to be "universally accepted" as I'm confident in it without anyone's endorsement.

Lots, but I'm not POTUS, nor did I declare that I have "very little time to watch TV" like Trump did when there were reports he watched upwards of 8 hours per day.

It's like when the folks here who claim to have boycotted the NFL won't stop talking about it...it's sad, and cringeworthy.

Whats sad and "cringe worthy" is your apparent inability to see that we no longer care about the NFL for sport ! We have moved on and only talk about it in the context of DESTROYING it and Roger Goodell ! Now maybe you understand? For a smart guy you sure play dumb a good part of the time.

You failed to mention that Kaepernick settles with the nfl.trumps quote to Jerry Jones....Trump said that the the topic of the anthem is "a very winning, strong issue for me," according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

"Tell everybody, you can't win this one," Trump told Jones, according to the report. "This one lifts me.”......trump is a political genius

Ditch: If you truly believe that you are making a difference in a direction that's important to you, that's all that should matter.

I would just challenge your perception of the effect you're having and ask you to reconcile your perceived success with facts.

For example, the NFL's ratings were up in 2018 and the NFL capitulated before the season by backsliding on rules against kneeling and after the season by settling with Kaepernick and Reid.

By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8257), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 20, 19 6:43 AM
def·a·ma·tion
the action of damaging the good reputation of someone; slander or libel.

Acting with "reckless disregard" is the standard in a defamation suit.

"What was the reckless disregard?", you ask?

Well, the suit is clear in its allegations if you're so inclined.

Peddling hate by attacking, vilifying, bullying and threatening an innocent teen is going to get expensive.

By Po Boy (5299), Water Mill on Feb 20, 19 8:04 AM
Thanks for prompting my research...the suit is hilarious!

Half of the allegedly defamatory statements are clearly attributed to others, including a quote from the statement released by the kids' high school.

Only two of the seven articles cited even mention plaintiff by name!
