Democrat Perry Gershon Will Run Again In 2020, Seeking To Unseat U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin

Perry Gershon announced his intention to run again to represent the 1st Congressional District in Brookhaven on Saturday. GREG WEHNER
Apr 9, 2019 2:00 PM

Perry Gershon, the East Hampton resident who lost a bid last fall to unseat U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, has formally entered the race for the seat again.

Mr. Gershon on Thursday, April 4, filed to be a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and hopes to again be the party’s standard-bearer against Mr. Zeldin in November 2020.

“We had a great Democratic effort in the last run—the enthusiasm and the record turnout, we want to build on that and present our story better across the entire district,” Mr. Gershon said on Friday.

Mr. Gershon, a retired real estate investor, lost to Mr. Zeldin by just over 11,000 votes in November, a margin of about 4 percent of the vote total. After the election, Mr. Gershon said he was buoyed by the relatively tight margin, compared to the easy 16-percentage-point win Mr. Zeldin had logged in 2016 against the Democratic candidate, Anna Throne-Holst, amid the Trump election wave.

Mr. Gershon performed well in the East End townships, especially on the South Fork, where Democratic registration numbers give him an advantage. But to win the district, he acknowledged, he is going to have to make more of an impact in the western part of the district, including the Republican stronghold towns of Brookhaven and Smithtown, where Mr. Zeldin grew up and lives.

Mr. Gershon said he has already started attending community events in Brookhaven again.

“I will spend more time up there and will be working very hard to identify with those areas,” he said, adding, “I’m here to fight for the entirety of Eastern Long Island.”

With a second bite at the apple, Mr. Gershon said, he hopes that his visibility and awareness among voters—polls after recent elections have shown that voters in the western towns were simply unfamiliar with the South Fork-based Democratic nominees—will help him close the gap with Mr. Zeldin.

“Last time, nobody had heard of me,” he said. “This time, I’m a lot further along. And this is a district where we’ve seen Democrats like George Hochbrueckner and Otis Pike need two cycles in order to win.”

Mr. Gershon said he has heard nothing about other potential Democratic hopefuls for the challengers’ nomination. He won a five-way primary race last year, and costly primaries have put the Democratic challenger at an economic disadvantage in the last two campaigns against Mr. Zeldin.

The Republican-led tax overhaul, which lifted federal exemptions for state and local taxes and has left a heavy new tax burden on New Yorkers as a result, will be front and center in the race this year, Mr. Gershon surmised, along with environmental concerns and economic inequality.

Mr. Zeldin’s office responded by saying the 2020 re-election campaign is far from its concern at this early date.

“Right now, Congressman Zeldin’s focus, far and away, is on his job representing his constituents of [the 1st Congressional District],” a statement from a spokesperson said. “He’s committed to delivering results, and, whether it’s ensuring East End employers have the workforce they need or bolstering our communities’ maritime infrastructure, his effectiveness is indisputable.”

"I will spend more time up there and will be working very hard to identify with those areas," he said. "I'm here to fight for the entirely to eastern Long Island."

These quotes explain his position quite well. A true local indeed.

Where is "up there"? From where does he speak? "Those areas"? hmm.
Off to a great start Perry.

I think Perry's sentiments may alienate those voters not from the east end.
Regardless, Lee is working hard for our first congressional district and will gladly welcome all opponents with verve and enthusiasm when the time comes.

This article starts out perpetuating a lie. Park Avenue Perry needs to admit he lives in Manhattan and stop pretending to be a “local”. The people “up there” in “those areas” saw right through him, as did true Eastenders. You can’t win on East Hampton and Sagaponack alone.

Donald Trump is no more required to release his tax returns than you are. There is no legal requirement for any person to release tax returns and certainly ill advised under the lack of civility Democrats promised would return if they were elected. In fact, personal tax returns are protected by law. whoever got hold of the president's 1995 return and released it to the media committed a felony and the media in publishing it without Trump's consent, broke the law as well.

By Po Boy (3872), Water Mill on Apr 9, 19 1:48 PM
Your reliance on your "intended point" was an assertion that whatever defects were present in the original statement, they didn't render it incorrect.

But it was incorrect, in both cases, right?

The very nature of using the term "clarification" and later "misstatement" negates any assertion of the correctness of the original comment. And by "reliance" on "intended point" you mean providing clarification, yes?

Thank God its not Obamas or Hillary's Congress doing the investigation on Ilhan, she would have already been given immunity.

Congresswoman Omar recently made her most vile comments yet. At a fundraiser for the Council on American Islamic Relations, she reduced the 9/11 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans to “some people did something.”

Mueller wrote that investigators “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”
Apr 18, 19 10:02 PM appended by Mr. Z
As for the question of whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign, Mueller wrote that the campaign “expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts. But Mueller said investigators concluded, “While the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign, the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges.”

Not even the Catholic Church believed that all abortions were murder until the 19th century when Pius IX reversed nearly two thousand years of dogmatic teaching that abortion early in the pregnancy, while a grievous sin, was not murder because the fetus had not yet achieved personhood.

.... for those who say there are "haters" here, you are mistaken. Many here do not hate people because of their race, religion or nationality but do not want people here who practice hate against us in our own land. Hate begets hate.

If someone says they will not obey our laws because they are not "God's laws" (of course according to their god) or believes in a doctrine that it is not only right but necessary to kill those who disagree with them, they do NOT belong in western countries ...more

Hey Po, welcome back! I'll grant you that most democrats running for president are framing the next presidential election as a referendum on Trump rather than their own ideas.

That's one reason I like Andrew Yang, whose platform isn't about Trump but the technological reality that mass job losses will happen sooner rather than later thanks to widespread automation, and suggests we affirmatively deal with it today rather than react tomorrow.

Ismlamophobia. Is it in the DSM? It SHOULD be. Risperidone could enable these lunatics to lead normal lives.
