In Her Book 'Mountain Interval' Photographer Shares Views Of Majestic Peaks

May 20, 2019 9:34 PM

Renate Aller is a contemporary photographer from Germany who is based in New York. As a child, she spent vacations visiting, hiking, and photographing the mountains of Austria, Germany, and Italy, beginning a lifelong appreciation for nature and the outdoors.

On Friday, May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m., Ms. Aller will be at the Parrish Art Museum to discuss her book “Mountain Interval” with museum director Terrie Sultan.

Ms. Aller’s latest project includes mountain peaks from six continents. Her book includes 61 images from her Mountain Interval portfolio. These photographs were taken from locations as high as 22,500 feet (adjacent to Mount Everest) to the European glaciers and mountain peaks of her childhood vacations. The subject matter is monumental, yet the images connect the viewer in a way that is not overpowering. Ms. Aller engages viewers with these giants in all their detail, the veins and textures of the rocks in their constantly transient state. She isolates the mountain from its expected surroundings, using and presenting the familiar and the known in an intimate way, relating to parallel realities from different locations, opening up conversations between the different landscapes in which we live.

A book signing will follow the discussion. Admission is $12 (free for members, children and students) at parrishart.org. The Parrish Art Museum is at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill.
