UPDATE: Trump Announces Two-Week Delay For ICE Raids

Jun 24, 2019 11:15 AM

UPDATE: Sunday, 11:30 a.m.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he will delay nation-wide ICE raids, originally slated to begin Sunday morning under his order, for two weeks as a way to pressure Congress to sort out immigration issues.

He tweeted the announcement hours before the raids were expected to start.

"At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border," the tweet read. "If not, Deportations start!"

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called on Mr. Trump to stop the raids in a statement on Saturday and he tweeted the delay announcement hours later.

There are a number of immigration issues currently being addressed in Congress, including an approximately $4.5 billion spending bill to provide resources to the rising number of immigrants entering the U.S. at the southern border.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina, also introduced a bill that would require those seeking asylum to apply in their home countries instead of at the border as well as increase the maximum detention period for minors from 20 to 100 days.

New York Attorney General Letitia James denounced the president's latest action in a prepared statement, saying that his using of immigrant families as "pawns in a game of political chess is immoral and reprehensible."

"Immigrants should have never been placed in jeopardy by a president who is willing to rip families apart in order to score points with his base," she said in the statement.

UPDATE: Saturday, 12:50 p.m.

Minerva Perez, executive director of the Latino advocacy group OLA of Eastern Long Island, said Saturday that she is concerned that the East End will be affected by this sweep, as it has been in the past.

She sent an email to immigration attorneys and advocates late Friday night briefing them on the situation and what her group plans to do next. In the email, she said that the targeted removal cases are most likely not for people considered to be dangerous but rather for people who have lost their case for asylum or who cannot prove their child is "sick enough for it to matter if you are deported."

She spoke to an immigration attorney who was briefed by ICE attorneys on Friday and said that immigrants held for criminal hearings, arrested for dangerous crimes or serving time for a conviction undergo a different legal process and will probably not be affected by the impending raid.

"They happen out here in a way that you're driving through town and you see a number of black unmarked escalades and it's a gut-wrenching feeling," Ms. Perez said. "You want to be able to say, 'OK good, they're getting the bad guy, or they're getting the drug guy, or they're getting this and that.' That's not the case."

"It's a matter of really understanding what damage is being done to community because fathers have been taken, mothers have been taken, children are just absolutely shaken and jostled by this whole thing."

OLA, which stands for Organización Latino-Americana, will have a public meeting on Monday evening at the Christ Episcopal Church in Sag Harbor to encourage community engagement and support.

Ms. Perez's group also plans to host workshops and share resources at religious institutions and workplaces for information related to immigration rights, how employers can protect their workforce and emergency planning to prevent children from going to foster care.

ORIGINAL STORY:

President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, to conduct mass raids on undocumented immigrant families with existing deportation orders beginning as early as Sunday morning, The Washington Post reported, and the East End will likely be targeted.

According to multiple news sources, ICE workers are aiming to round up about 2,000 family members living in major cities and regions with high immigrant populations. This comes five days after Mr. Trump tweeted a warning that ICE will begin the process of removing "millions of illegal aliens" next week.

Local immigrants have been the target of ICE raids in the past. A year ago, 225 people were detained in a sweep in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

Top state officials have scorned the recent order.

"The Trump Administration's impending blitz of ICE raids across the country, including here in New York, is shameful and wholly unacceptable, and we will fight back at every turn to protect our immigrant families," Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said in a prepared statement. "As I've said before, if there is a move to deport immigrants then I say start with me--a son of immigrants."

Mr. Cuomo added that he is directing the State Liberty Defense Program's Rapid Response team to "be on high alert and immediately assist any family in need of legal services across the state this weekend."

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a prepared statement, "This is an immoral and unconscionable act by a president and an Administration hell-bent on dividing our country, and, as New York's top law enforcement officer, I can assure New Yorkers we will do everything in our power to fight back against these inhumane policies."

Concerned residents seeking further assistance can call the Office for New Americans hotline at 1-800-566-7636. Individuals can check if a removal order has been issued against them by calling the Immigration Court Information System at 1-800-898-7180.

Reminds me of the folks who think undocumented immigrants shouldn't have due process.

What if a U.S. citizen is deported? The response is usually something along the lines "if you're a citizen all you have to do is prove it!"

If you have no due process, when are you supposed to prove it???

Voting is one of our most sacred rights as citizens. Any legislator, regardless of party affiliation, who is advocating to give that right away to illegals should be removed from office immediately.

Everyone who voted to give driver's licensees to illegal immigrants. Seems there is a loophole in the law that could essentially left illegal immigrants register to vote and there would be no way to cross check the validity of such an act. Oversight? Nah. Intentional? Yeah. The Democrat party is preparing to sell every citizen out and most of you are too numb to realize it.

You are right, that is not advocating, that is acting, that is enabling, that is giving foreign criminals the same rights as your tax paying citizens. No that is actively betraying your state and your country and selling out the citizens you took an oath to serve. Everyone of those people who voted for it and the idiot who signed it into law proved they are unfit for office and should be removed.

I think we can all agree that those who are already here, who have had their due process and have been ordered to be deported have no right to complain when they are in fact deported. And on this eve of the 4th of July, Democrats plan to celebrate by burning the flag and playing with their balloons in effigy and protest.

Nope. Not frightened at all June. In fact, every year during Public Service Week in DC, the same thing takes place - tanks and military hardware are displayed in the DC mall area for commemoration and display of patriotism. Those you are referring to who have "no culpable mindset" have special authorization to work. So the answer to that question, is yes.

But clearly by your statement "a path to citizenship should be available so they're working on the books" doesn't apply to that group.

By Po Boy (5090), Water Mill on Jul 5, 19 10:23 AM

In other words (and in an effort to head off whatever navel-gazing you want to conduct next) a momentary presence in the country shouldn't be enough.

In order to qualify, that child should have grown up as an American. I don't think a person who is in the country for a single day has grown up as an American, do you?

That's a considerable grasping at straws on the incentivizing analogy. All those things are illegal and if you commit the crime, you do the time. Those things are all legal, until the law is broken. See the difference?
By Po Boy (5090), Water Mill on Jul 8, 19 9:54 PM
And yet many of those children are not to blame for entering this country illegally and growing up as American in all ways but on paper. Those kids deserve the chance to formalize what many of us already know: they are American.

Yet we still choose to incentivize some illegal behavior because the alternative (of banning corporal punishment, implementing prohibition, infringing on the 2A, or mass deportation) is worse.

I understand it doesn't matter how many illegals there are in the country as long as they have a pathway to citizenship, you're good with that knowing full well the flood gates remain open.

Deportation is the ethical dilemma, not giving incentive in any form is a no brainer.

Nah, not everyone who is in the country deserves a path to citizenship, or even to stay. I'd even support Trump's original desire of an ocean-to-ocean wall (although I think forward operating bases would be cheaper and smarter) in exchange for meaningful reform!

Public Service Recognition week is included in National Military Appreciation Month. So you see June, it is not uncommon for the two to combine events to maximize public exposure.

You incorrectly reference the holiday as a date on the calendar - July 4th - a common "mistake" but that's ok. Are we to assume June is aware that July 4th is also referred to as Independence Day? She seems to get the basics, but seems to fall a bit short on the evolution of the holiday and the mannerisms of the observance. I mean, really. Fireman are common in the parade, what role did they have on July 4, 1776? Pedantry abound for sure.

Pedantically speaking, of course. But the issue remains of her understanding of how "it" is celebrated. She seems a bit conflicted, all references to her rabid ideology aside.

Yes, Obama "did alot of campaigning in those locations which can't vote" for US president but also spent a lot of time after his election gerrymandering the states of Guatamala, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Cuba, Foreghanistan and dare I say Kenya- to round out the 57.

One thing is clear, the joke is on June and the definition of "gracious".
By Po Boy (5090), Water Mill on Jul 7, 19 11:04 PM
Lol, he could admit to misspeaking but instead blamed the teleprompter. You don't think that level of insecurity is funny?

LOL...good lord the blind hatred...the president was on teleprompter and had to adjust impromptu to where he was in the presentation when it had technical difficulties. You don't think that's a simple mistake?

Donald Trump personally, aka "he", kicked someone out of a rally? Source pease.

"Trump Ejects Protester Who Holds Up Picture Of Donald With Jeffrey Epstein" - - - YouTube.

But I think I see where you're going with this. You dispute the fact that "he" kicked the guy out because The Donald personally didn't put his toe in the guy's behind but simply directed his minions to carry out his will. (His lifelong habit.)

OBVIOUSLY it was a simple mistake on his behalf (you don't think we actually accuse him of believing airports existed in 1776, right?) but the man has to cast blame elsewhere so it's the teleprompter's fault!

I don't think it's hatred to find that level of insecurity funny. I think a little self-deprecating humor, like Obama invoked for his gaffe, would go a long way.

By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 8, 19 1:13 PM
Then you should also understand that since it's just a flag, love of country places clear context on the greatness of the achievements since; not on tearing it down and denegrating it present day.

By Po Boy (5090), Water Mill on Jul 8, 19 5:31 PM
Fair enough. I agree that criticism of the flag is not an expression of love for the country, I'm just glad we're a different country in 2019 than we were when that flag represented us or I would be one of the folks who aren't expressing love for it.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 8, 19 7:45 PM
Allow me to translate. The kind of criticism of the flag we've seen is an expression of hatred for the country. In this case, the Betsy Ross flag is a symbol of slavery.

We've learned one thing from this, Kaepernick and his supporters were full of crap when he and they said his previous protests weren't protesting the flag, the country or the national anthem. The truth has finally come out.
By Po Boy (5090), Water Mill on Jul 8, 19 9:41 PM
You just translated to some crazy jibberish, is that code to your peeps?
By Fred s (3194), Southampton on Jul 8, 19 9:49 PM
Lol, is criticizing past de jure racism and present de facto racism in America criticizing all of America, ever?

I don't think so. I bet he loves the first amendment, at least.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 8, 19 9:50 PM
Kaepernick has proven that answer, to be, yes. It's why we're having this pleasant little conversation.

By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 8, 19 10:45 PM
I think we're here because some snowflakes can't handle any criticisms of a country that once practiced human chattel slavery, practiced de jure racism into the 70s via anti-miscegenation laws, and practices de facto racism today in the disparate treatment of similarly-placed people in the criminal justice system based on race.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 8, 19 10:48 PM

Even you acknowledge there are things you don't like about America, why do you melt down in the face of others' criticisms instead of refuting them or agreeing that they're a problem?
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 9, 19 10:14 PM

Actually Betsy Ross didn't create the flag, the original design is the battle flag for an East End regiment during the War for Independence . The original flag was found in a Bridgehampton home during the 1950's. Anyone who is "offended" by a freaking flag should just toughen up Buttercup!
By bigfresh (4593), north sea on Jul 8, 19 6:08 PM
When did the 13 star American flag become offensive to the alt left? Barak Hussein Obama had 2 of them on stage when He was inaugurated. Is this some recent phenomenon drummed up By NIKE and their puppet Kapernik to sell more high priced sneakers? Suckers!!
By bigfresh (4593), north sea on Jul 9, 19 6:21 AM
It's true that Nike purposely makes less sneakers than it could sell in order to create scarcity and foster a black market for its "rare" shoes.

Wouldn't it be something if they manufactured the outrage to get everyone talking about this shoe, only to re-release it at a later date and higher price?

Doesn't matter to me, though. I'm not buying them whether they're $1,000 or $100.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 9, 19 6:37 AM

Leave it to talking heads on the right to make it something political.
By Mr. Z (11670), North Sea on Jul 9, 19 6:50 AM
Nah, from what I gather flag code only applies to the literal flag, not flag designs.

For example, using an actual flag as a plate then dropping it in the trash is against flag code, but doing the same with a paper plate that has a flag design on it is not.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (8048), HAMPTON BAYS on Jul 9, 19 7:04 AM

The difference being that people were shuffled through as fast as possible during the Obama administration instead of left to languish, which now causes overcrowding, unsanitary condition, and a lack of resources.

For example, the Obama administration didn't argue that they should be able to hold asylum seekers indefinitely; the Trump administration did.

Nike pulled the Betsy Ross shoe for marketing reasons. That company's cynical merchandising says precisely NOTHING about Democratic reverence for the flag.

Unsurprisingly though, true believers herein have deliberately conflated that company's deplorable decision to be representative of Democratic opinion.
