ATT Will Test Tower Site Off Spinney Road In East Quogue

Apr 1, 2015 1:37 PM

Officials representing AT&T will test a site off Spinney Road in East Quogue next week to determine whether a 140-foot-tall cellphone tower would obstruct the view of residents.

The crew is planning to send up an oversized balloon on Monday, April 6, to give residents an idea of how tall the proposed tower would stand. If it rains, the balloon will be deployed on Tuesday instead and, if necessary, Wednesday.

According to Ben Roberts, a public affairs representative for AT&T, the company is looking to construct a new wireless telecommunications facility before the end of the year, when it will lose its place on a pole on Central Boulevard in East Quogue that is owned by Cablevision.

“It is imperative that our customers have impeccable, uninterrupted service,” Mr. Roberts said, explaining that AT&T is looking to lease a small lot on Spinney Road, near Serenity Place, currently owned by Southampton Town. “The goal is to have the tower built before the lease agreement is up.”

Mr. Roberts said he didn’t know if his company would propose a monopole or a different type of communications facility. He also didn’t know the size of the town-owned property, which is landlocked and set back from the road.

Southampton Town officials did not return calls this week seeking information on the land and the proposed tower. A formal application has not yet been submitted to the Town Planning Board, according to Mr. Rodgers, because AT&T must first finalize a lease for the land.

The lot in question is located directly west of some 168 acres between Spinney and Lewis roads, on which Arizona-based Discovery Land Company wants to construct 108 single-family luxury homes, 10 condominiums, a clubhouse and an 18-hole golf course. That company’s application seeks approval from the Town Board for a planned development district, a special overlay designation allowing uses precluded by zoning.

Don't worry. Once the NIMBYs, BANANAs, LULUs and NOPEs come out of the woodwork this will get tied up for months past the existing lease deadline. Then without cell service East Quogue will be a much quieter and more peaceful place.
