On Monday, the East Quogue School District will welcome Kelly Freeborn as the school’s new assistant principal and Committee on Special Education, or CSE, chairwoman.

The full-time position, which was approved by taxpayers in May, was designed to ensure that an active administrator be present at the Central Avenue school at all times. Superintendent Robert Long, who has also served as the building’s principal for 18 years, has been the school’s sole administrator since 2015, when former part-time Superintendent Les Black resigned.

“If I’m up in Albany, there's always going to be somebody here,” Mr. Long said.

Ms. Freeborn, 43, whose starting salary for the 2018-19 school year is $120,000, will spearhead the school’s special education program, as well as work closely with teachers and parents to create lasting curricula for kindergartners through fifth-graders.

The newly created position will also allow for the district’s current CSE chairwoman, Lauren Porter, to fill the role of school psychologist—a position previously held by Dr. Ed Vinski, who was laid off in 2013-14, saving the district approximately $60,000.

On Friday, Mr. Long said that among 15 candidates, Ms. Freeborn was the best suited for the position. Since 2014, she has served as the principal at Irving Primary School in Highland Park, New Jersey, where she implemented special initiatives to integrate special education and general education students into the same classroom.

"The environment was to create a community of learners rather than everyone being on their own island,” said Ms. Freeborn, who moved from New Jersey to Baiting Hollow just last Monday. “This position really spoke to me because of the combination of the CSE chair and the assistant principal.”

Prior to her time as principal, she taught first grade at Ironia Elementary School in Randolph, New Jersey, for 12 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Rider University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Montclair State University.

“Her all around experience and expertise in special education, curriculum and her experience as a building level principal really set her apart,” Mr. Long said of Ms. Freeborn. “I really view her as the complete package in what we were looking for.”

“I’m not looking to hop from school to school. I’m ready to settle down,” Ms. Freeborn added. “I want to be in a community surrounded by like minded people. I think East Quogue will be a wonderful home for me.”

That's obscene!

Seems pretty reasonable actually. What do you think they should be paid?
