Eastport’s newest edition for fans of Mexican cuisine is Taqueria Cinco de Mayo Grocery on Montauk Highway.

The market, restaurant and bakery opened at the end of September, and its owners are striving to provide customers with quality, authentic Mexican cuisine.

Owner Refugio Iglesias and his business partner, Angel Martinez, who have also operated the Railroad Deli in Center Moriches for the past three years, decided to open a taqueria after noticing that Eastport lacked a place to get quality Mexican food.

Mr. Iglesias attributes the warm welcome he’s received to the kind people of Eastport: “This is a beautiful town — everyone here has been very nice and excited to try our food.”

Taqueria Cinco de Mayo offers a full menu of classic Mexican entrées and drinks. “We want to offer traditional Mexican food: tacos, tortas, tamales, adobo, mole poblano, and many others. We also have fresh produce and a market here as well,” Mr. Iglesias said.

Bread is baked on site daily, offering Mexican and Guatemalan specialties such as conchas and mantecadas.

The market area is packed with sauces, seasonings, canned goods and snacks.

Most of the cooking is done by Gabriela Martinez, Mr. Martinez’s sister. All of her recipes have been passed down from their mother.

“Our mother is from Puebla, Mexico. She was always cooking at home as we grew up, and that’s how we all learned, especially Gabriela,” Mr. Martinez said.

Ms. Martinez said she has been cooking since she was 14 years old. She was very excited when she heard that her brother and his partner were seriously considering opening the taqueria.

Taqueria Cinco de Mayo is located at 491 Montauk Highway and can be reached at 631-801-6277.

Eastport is in desperate need of quality businesses willing to take a chance on the hamlet! Lots of quality locations on a traffic’d stretch of Montauk Hwy.
