State installs traffic light at Flanders intersection

May 5, 2010 11:57 AM

A traffic light was installed Monday at the intersection of Route 24 and Bellows Pond Road in Flanders, and state officials say it will be switched into operation in the coming weeks.

New York State Department of Transportation crews installed the traffic light after Southampton Town Police Chief James Overton requested it—in December 2007—to slow motorists and reduce the number of accidents at that intersection. The state Department of Transportation conducted a six-month study and decided that a traffic light would be the best remedy to curb speeding motorists and impatient drivers waiting to make a left-hand turn there.

Eileen Peters, a spokeswoman for the department, said officials culled three years of traffic accident data during the study. Officials found that the type and frequency of accidents, and the delays motorists experience while trying to make a left-hand turn from Bellows Pond Road to Flanders Road, which can be especially dangerous during rush hours, warranted the installation of a traffic light.

“Folks, at a certain point, will get impatient and do stupid things,” she said.

Work to install the traffic light, which cost about $125,000, started in the fall, but the department ran into some delays with the electrical system. The wires and the signal were hung on Monday. The light is currently flashing and will be fully activated within two weeks, Ms. Peters said.

“It’s basically a warning to get motorists warmed up,” she said.
