Driver Crashes Into East Hampton Goldberg's On Pantigo Road, Sending Two To Hospital

Apr 7, 2015 1:11 PM

An SUV driven by an elderly man crashed into Goldberg’s Famous Bagels on Pantigo Road in East Hampton at 10:05 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, sending both the driver and his wife to the hospital.

Anthony Rispoli, 88, of Montauk accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal while trying to park, causing the vehicle to crash into the brick facade, according to East Hampton Town Police. Airbags deployed for both Mr. Rispoli and his wife, Christine.

Amagansett and East Hampton Village paramedics—who happened to be inside Goldberg’s, eating breakfast, at the time of the crash—were able to immediately respond.

“Their response was 45 seconds,” said Goldberg’s owner Paul Wayne. “I was making a bagel sandwich, and I heard a big boom. It was like someone really big fell down in the attic.”

East Hampton Town Police responded to the scene, as well as the East Hampton Village Ambulance, which took the two victims to Southampton Hospital as a precaution. Mr. Rispoli suffered minor cuts in the accident.

“Hopefully, they’re okay,” Mr. Wayne said later that day.

According to East Hampton Town Fire Marshal Tom Baker, there was no structural damage to the building, except for some minor cracking in the masonry. Other than people milling about the scene, there was no disruption to the business.

Why do bagel stores on the East End have this problem all the time. There were several times the one on Main Street in WHB was crashed into, plus the one in Southampton and now East Hampton. So weird.

crashes happen when people try to open their coffee, eat their bagel, and answer their cell phones all at the same time, then put their car in drive instead of reverse
