East Hampton School District will be hosting two forums at the high school focusing on the issue of drugs and substance abuse following a surge in drug-related incidents within the school and the community. One of the forums will be held in Spanish on Thursday at 7 p.m. and the other in English on March 23 at 6 p.m.

Students, parents, educators and community members are all encouraged to attend the meeting, which will bring together organizations like Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, East Hampton Town Police Department, Suffolk County EMS, and others.

“There has been an uptick in what we believe is the use of drugs at every level,” said East Hampton High School Principal Adam Fine.

In particular, Mr. Fine said many kids have been resorting to prescription pills. Two weeks ago, East Hampton Town Police reported that a 17-year-old was arrested at the high school and charged with criminal possession of Xanax.

“As an administrator and father it’s daunting and the only way to attack it is with community engagement,” said Mr. Fine.

“The message needs to be delivered on every level, loud and clear to provide help for kids who have fallen victim to drugs. We have to be there for these kids.”

Mr. Fine said the district wanted to make sure both the English and Spanish speaking communities had the opportunity to hear that message.

“It’s essential because of the topic,” he said. “It’s important that the Spanish speaking community is informed.”

Thursday’s presentation will be conducted completely in Spanish through LICAD’s keynote program, which Mr. Fine said will be every bit as detailed and structured as the March presentation.

"Multi-lingual"? Stop being so PC and just say bi-lingual because half the school population is Latino and their parents are not English-speaking citizens.

Dont make this a racial issue. This is deadly and we need all parents on board.

An "uptick"? How about now you have to admit that the rampant drug and alcohol use in the EHHS is at a critical level? You were warned. Parents asked for help. I hope every parent tunes in. it's here. Lives are in jeopardy. Young lives. And for the record, I am glad you finally brought it forward and broke free from those that may have controlled the spin.
