A 2005 Jeep Liberty — with a mother and 2-year-old child inside — started smoking at the corner of Route 114 and Stephen Hands Path in East Hampton before becoming engulfed in flames on Thursday morning.

The 46-year-old mother and the child got out of the car safely, and were not taken to the hospital.

Captain Chris Anderson of the East Hampton Town Police Department said the cause of the fire could not be determined immediately. The East Hampton Fire Department responded to the scene at 6:48 a.m. and quickly put the fire out. Captain Anderson said the firefighters extinguished the car without incident.

The driver saw smoke coming from under the hood, pulled over, and got out of the car with her child, the captain said.

“It happens a lot this time of year, believe it or not,” Captain Anderson said, adding that mice sometimes creep under the hood near a warm engine and chew through wires.
