Southampton Supervisor To Give State Of The Town Address This Thursday

May 1, 2012 4:12 PM

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst will give her annual State of the Town Address at Town Hall on Thursday, May 3, at 1 p.m.

It will be Ms. Throne-Holst’s third State of the Town Address and comes just a week after the new comptroller, Leonard Marchese, gave a glowing review of the town’s fiscal management over the past two years, noting that the town has erased a multimillion-dollar deficit and built fund reserves in just two years, largely due to staffing and spending cuts.

“We’re in good shape,” Ms. Throne-Holst said, giving a hint of what her address on Thursday will highlight. “The bright spots are that we are out of deficit, that we have some healthy fund balance—not across the board but in some of our bigger funds—and that we’ve just undertaken a very favorable borrowing. The ‘but’ is that we still don’t know where some of our revenues are going to come in—mortgage tax doesn’t look like it’s budging in the direction we’d like it to go; we’re still dealing with an economy that is stagnant; the fallout from the county’s budget issues remains to be seen; we’re dealing with the 2-percent tax cap and we don’t know what our fixed costs are going to look like next year.”

The supervisor also noted that contract negotiations with the town’s police and civil service employee unions will begin later this year, the first since the state imposed the 2-percent tax cap.

The announcement of the speech was made by the supervisor’s office on Monday morning. The speech is a month later than usual, because the Town Board had still not chosen a new comptroller by the first week of April, when Ms. Throne-Holst has given her address in the past.

Hopefully ATH will explain all the shenanigans going on about the police files in storage which Chief Wilson seeks.

What a tangled web we weave!

Mr. Marchese certainly is NOT going to bite the hand that is feeding him.

ATH State of the Town address:

I am happy to be able to report to the STPD PBA that in the past year, despite the continuing budget crisis, I have assured that you receive MORE pay than ever, opened up eight even more highly-paid p.d. positions for your succession by retiring eight SOA officers, prevented any of YOU from being retired, and continued the payment of your compensation "enhancements" in exchange for the twenty-year retirement proviso that you ...more

I despise the police. I despise what the police do. I despise what the police say. I despise what the police are paid to do. The Stpd is a gorilla. The STPD control everything. STPD PBA are crybabies that get everything they want. Everyone on the board are puppets of the pba.

Maybe if you didnt break the law and werent arrested, we wouldn't have so many ridiculous comments from you. You only write comments when your able to verbally smash town employees. ...more

Augmentum ad hominem....lol.
Your stating your own fallacies. You rant about these departments as a whole when one individual hits the neighborhood rag. The above is a state of the town address. Not about who has or has not been promoted or how much anyones salary is. I also doubt its going to be directed toward compensation "enhancements". Thanks for the English lesson but, I try not to ise dictionaries or thesaurus's to interpret what I would like to say. I try not to make my hat size as high ...more

Morale is at an all time low in Town Hall and that stems from the top. All we will hear about is money saved, not all the money wasted, the mistakes made and the bad judgement calls.

The STPD PBA will not recieve more pay than ever as they gave up several thousands dollars each in the past year.
Previously you asked for the forced retirement of high paying members of the police department and now that it occured, you complain about it.
"Everyone on the board are puppets of the pba" Have you paid ANY attention to the fight between the PBA and Nuzzi, Malone, and now Scalera? They recently tried to fire PBA board members and threatened the vice -president.

Look at some of the budget components, the mortgage tax, basically the town collects a tax on a RE transfer for doing nothing, and makes it less afordable for middle income people to buy a home, also not the most reliable revenoe stream; have to deal with a 2% tax cap- thats a good thing to taxpayers; dont know where "fixed costs" will be, yes you do if you enfore the cap salaries which are the fiex cost can't rise above 2%- its the variable costs i.e fuel that you can't be 100% sure of.

WRONG:
As far as high pay, do the math. They gave up $6000 each but will recieve about $2000 each in overtime. That is the dollar amount increase in overtime divided by the number of police officers.

ATH did not pick who got retired. If you read the news you will see that she wanted to retire people based on senority and it was the Rebublican/Conservatives on the board who cherry picked and decided who should stay.

So Malone threatens the PBA, tried to fire eight of them, fights ...more

to Spinny OHO:

I DID the math, and calculated a total of $$9K/yr/cop in overtime pay, offsetting the $$6K give-back by over $$3K ($$850K [booked overtime] spread over 92 officers). Since the total you arrived at was but $$2K, I initially assumed that you had made an error. However, now I see that you calculated the INCREASED overtime (under Chief Wilson aegis) over the NORMAL overtime (under previous chiefs) to arrive at the $$2K figure.

On the other hand, looked at objectively, ...more

ATH: Response following the delivery of the State of the Town address:

Thank you for your warm reception of my "State of the Town" address. Thank you especially for overlooking the FIVE MILLION DOLLARS that we are needlessly expending for the p.d. Thank you for not asking if there is an alternative to this stupendous expenditure. Thank you, in particular, for not asking how tax dollars could be expended in alternative to funding $$220K/yr/ cops (VIDE the Lt. Kiernan article.)
