Riverside Prostitution Sting Nets Ten

Jun 6, 2012 11:02 AM

A prostitution sting in Riverside late Saturday and early Sunday resulted in the arrests of nine men and one
woman, Southampton Town Police said.

The department’s Community Response Unit, a specialized group of officers that enforces quality-of-life issues, conducted the bust in response to complaints from residents and business owners about what police described as “frequent and highly visible prostitution” in the area around the hamlet traffic circle.

Undercover officers posed as both prostitutes and “johns,” or customers. They netted eight arrests for patronizing a prostitute after police said the suspects agreed to pay an undercover female officer for sex, as well as one for prostitution and one for promoting prostitution in the fourth degree, all misdemeanors.

Fabian Bohr, 40, Timoteo Lopez, 27, Ruben Mutzutz, 36, Wilmo Urrea-Bedon, 43, Mario Soyos, 29, Marvin Boco, 27, and a 17-year-old boy, all of Riverside, and Amadeo Velasquez, 22, of Flanders were arrested between about 10 p.m. on Saturday and shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday on Flanders
Road. Each was charged with patronizing a prostitute in the third degree after officers
said they offered money—usually between $10 and $20, according to their arrest reports—for sex. Mr. Mutzutz was also charged with resisting arrest, also a misdemeanor, after police said he fought them. Mr. Velasquez was also charged with
driving without a license and driving an uninspected vehicle, both
violations, while Mr. Lopez was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Joe Lee McKay, 65, of Mastic was arrested at 10 p.m. on Saturday on Flanders Road and charged with promoting prostitution in the fourth degree, after officers said he “steered” two of the men to an undercover prostitute and negotiated the price of oral sex between the men and the prostitute.

April L. Robinson, 36, of Riverhead was arrested at 8:29 p.m. on Saturday on nearby Lake Avenue and charged with prostitution, after police said she agreed to perform oral sex in exchange for money.

All the men posted $200 bail, except Mr. Mutzutz, who posted $250 and the teenager, who posted $100. Mr. Boco and Ms. Robinson were each released on their own recognizance, Southampton Town Justice Court officials said. They did not have Mr. McKay’s arraignment details as of Monday, but Suffolk County sheriff’s office Chief of Staff Michael Sharkey said he was not being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside.

“We will continue these types of operations as a means to minimize the impact of quality-of-life offenses on local residents,” said Town Police Chief William Wilson Jr.
