Cops: Woman Sexually Assaulted In Southampton On Sunday

Southampton Town Police are searching for two men suspected of dragging a woman into the woods along County Road 39 in Southampton early Sunday morning and sexually assaulting her.

The victim, a 38-year-old woman, was walking eastbound along the northern side of the road near the Southampton Elks Lodge at about 4:30 a.m. when she was forced into a wooded area by the men, and assaulted, police said, offering no other information beyond the fact that it was a sexual assault. She was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for further evaluation, Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa said.

Town Police and Suffolk County Police helicopters, along with a Riverhead Town Police K-9 unit, conducted a search for the two men, but they were not located.

Both men are suspected of assaulting the woman, but police said they had few other details.

Police did not release information on the assault until asked by The Press on Monday evening about reports of police activity in that area early Sunday. They said further details, including sketches of the perpetrators, would be available on Tuesday, but the sketches were not ready, and the only additional description of the perpetrators police released was that they were “Hispanic males.”

There are many sexually motivated assaults on the East End, especially during the summer, with the influx in population, police said. Police largely do not release details on crimes of a sexual nature, saying that is done to protect victims.

Southampton Town Police Chief William Wilson Jr. said police would not discuss the details of the assault to protect the victim and the investigation. “If there’s any message we can put across, it would just be for everyone to be aware of their surroundings,” he said.

When asked about online criticism directed at the police for their delay in sharing information, the chief noted that his main concern was the crime victims, not media releases. He noted that his department was busy piecing together a case, lacks a public information officer and releases information when it can.

“I’m far more concerned that the investigators are investigating the crimes than they are releasing details about the crimes,” he said. “I realize everybody thinks that life is like an episode of ‘CSI,’ and a crime occurs at 10 p.m., and by 11 p.m. people are convicted and in jail—but that’s simply not the reality of the situation.”

Det. Sgt. Costa said anyone with information on the crime should call Town Police detectives at 702-2230 or email detectives at crimetips@southamptontownny.gov.

So that explains them poring over the parking lot at the old Treasure Inn when I was headed to Hampton Bays around 6 AM.

Sorry to read this but what is a woman doing alone on the street at 430 AM? No one deserves to have this happen at any time of the day but a little common sense might be in order.

You're an insensitive person and no you're not that sorry if you have the nerve to suggest that a grown adult not be there at that time..What are we the prisoners ???.You don't know the circumstances.....Women don't have the freedom to be out at that time of the morning???!!!Maybe she had a 5am appointment or maybe she works at the drycleaners right there!!!!

Police did not release information on the assault until asked about the incident by The Press on Monday evening.

What is going on? This is the third incident in 2 weeks where the police have been slow giving information to the press.

Is this a new way of investigating crimes in SH town or a new way of keeping things under the vest, as it were, by the new regime??? Hope not as we people in this town need to know that the police are working for us. More tranparency is the obvious answer.

New town police policy: we wont be reporting any crimes until after Labor Day. Tourists dont like to hear about crime in "paradise". Guess what? They already know. Take a look around and see who is standing around on street corners in every town out here now. Would you come to "paradise" next year?

This is a very tragic incident people should be safe and feel safe at anytime in this country. But sometimes being known as the Hamptons we think we are in a paradise immune from crime or safety issues. Guess what we are not, just read past police blotters of woman attacked at the beach in broad day light! This poor woman didn't realize the scum that drives CR39 at 430 from local out of control bars in Southampton and points east. In a more civilized world people are provided with reasonable transportation alternatives at any hour of the day or night. We can afford such things but the era of greed prevents their implementation. It was not a good choice for a woman to be walking alone at that hour on the highway. Perhaps it was her only choice. My heart goes out to her. To quote my 90 year old mother, the perpetrators of this violent assault should be hanged by choice parts of their anatomy.

I have to wonder why this woman was walking on the side of the highway at 4:30 am....if her car broke down or if she was in any trouble, she should have stayed put and called 911. That's just what you do. The police would have been there in a flash! Nonetheless, no one deserves to be attacked because of poor judgement. "In a flash?" hardly! The response time is terrible for the Town Police. I know wait times can be more than an hour. Unless the crime is imminent, you'd be lucky to see a patrol car before sunrise in that instance. I haven't seen a police presence in the North Sea and Shinnecock Hills area in weeks. I love what Chief Wilson is doing but he needs to fix this problem fast or there won't be much of an image to protect.

Do any of you read your own comments and wonder if you were actually thinking when you posted them? 9/10 posts on this site are made by the same group of people who have never had a positive thing to say about anything in the area. This story sounds very fishy-circumstances, inconsistencies with regular procedure,etc. It should be interesting to learn the detail as the emerge, but until then people should not be so quick to pass judgement on the victim or the alleged attackers.

Time for ICE to make a sweep of the area , starting by stopping the busses from Riverhead that disgorge a mob of day laborers a few times each morning on North Sea Road by the 7-11. How about checking the documentation of the men loitering for the purpose of working for cash and thereby violating tax law?! Time to fight back against this invasion.
