Police Investigate Shots Fired From Shinnecock Reservation

Jul 31, 2012 10:38 AM

Handgun fire from a beach on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation late Sunday night damaged a part of a home across Old Fort Pond in Shinnecock Hills, according to Southampton Town Police, who are still investigating the incident.

A Little Neck Road resident reported hearing a noise that sounded like gunfire and glass shattering shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Police said they responded and heard continuing gunfire coming from the east. They also recovered evidence appearing to be a bullet that had struck and damaged the wooden front door of the Little Neck Road home, in addition to a glass storm door, they said.

New York State Police—who have primary jurisdiction over the Shinnecock Indian Reservation—responded to the reservation’s Little Beach area, where they recovered shell casings from various caliber handguns.

The Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Unit also responded and canvassed the area, but no further information developed, police said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Town Police detectives at 702-2230.

Do the State Police have any idea about how many handguns and shotguns are on the reservation? First they are shooting at Baymen, and now into random space at night - this could be the act of one very dangerous/unstable person who may possess an abundance of firearms that are unregistered. People in the community and on the reservation should be VERY CONCERNED about this and State Police need to investigate.

Ok this is just crazy, They are outta control over there. NYS and the Federal government should be stepping in and be like all the stuff ur members have been doing and if this kinda stuff keeps happening it is going to prevent you guys from getting a casino ...

Their dreams of ever getting a casino out here go further and further down the chute with incidents like this. Does anyone "in charge" over there realize it?

The Shinnecocks just made a big mistake firing on rich home owners instead of baymen struggling to make a living.

Could incidents like this also affect attendance at the Pow Wow?

Its is sad, as in any community there are always a few that just don't know how to act and beyond that just don't care. For the most part good hardworking people live on the reservation and its just the rotten few who are putting the black cloud over the reservation land and its people.

true, but in such a closely knit community like the Shinnecocks, one would think that the peaceful lawabiding folks would be able to tip the State Police as to whom is responsible for the criminal acts.

I am a law abiding tribal citizen that works in law enforcement. Since we do not live near the location of the shooting; how would we be able to tip NYS Police. Please do not assume that we are aware of everything that goes on here.
Early a.m. is off to work only to return home in the evening. No time for beach patrol or to shoot at white people.
This type of behavior is unacceptable and needs to stop...

if you live on the res and work in law enforcement then u probably already have a pretty good idea who the bad apples are. it becomes your duty to use your law enforcement experience to assist the honest people on the res to rid the community of the felons in your midst. Step up or shut up.

Well for one the shooting took place while my family was asleep. With hundreds of families living here; how are we suppose to have an idea of who the bad apples are. Since you do not live on our land; you would never know what my family is doing to help the youth.
All adults living here are responsible for their own actions. It is the NYS Police job to investigate and NYS Court System to convict the person(s) responsible for this.

This will most likely be swept under the rug just like the incident with the baymen. The only people who may have a clue as to who shot off the gun most likely live on the Res and will not give up the persons name. I guess someone needs to be shot or killed for State Police to take this issue seriously. This makes me think twice about attending the Pow Wow..

Boycotting the Pow Wow would only harm the 99% of the trbal mebers who obey the law. Lance Gumbs should be held to task by the police since he has lied in the past about it being fireworks, not gunfire. Lance Gumbs knows who the shooters are and as a tribal leader should intervene and stop this before it becomes deadly.

A good portion of that 99% probably knows who the shooters are, yet are inclined not to cooperate with local authorities in order to identify them. Makes them just as guilty.

It's truly unbelievable the racist and disgusting comments that are allowed on stories about Shinnecock. I live here and have no idea who did this. Just like every other community, there are people here that do dumb things that I disagree with. So under the logic that most of you have, every Shinnecock is responsible for what other Shinnecock people do. I'm white, probably some of you are white, we must all be exactly the same as James Holmes who is the movie theater murderer. If a white guy rapes ...more

well indianforlife did toss out one sweeeet cliche bout 'beach patrol & who they love to shoot at' , he either has heard it all his life or he just made it up .. either way he was the first one to point out race
By david h (405), southampton on Aug 1, 12 8:21 AM
I believe ndn4life was including some of the duties that people outside the rez believe we should all do....like beach patrol, making sure no one is shooting guns, etc....basically we are all supposed to be everywhere at all times of the day, 24/7. Despite that we have our own lives like everyone else. This happened at what, midnight? Most people are in bed getting ready for work the next day (despite the comments that all we do is sell drugs, we're nothing but thugs, we all own an arsenal of guns....oh ...more

Shots fired on the Res? I'm shocked, shocked!

By the way, are they having that high end camping (glamping) event again this year? That seemed like a big bust, promtoer probably lost alot of cash-money, although the res probably got paid a nice fee
