Gregor Suspends Leaf Bagging In Southampton Town

Nov 7, 2012 11:23 AM

Because of the large amount of debris created on residential properties from Hurricane Sandy, the Southampton Town Highway Department has suspended its new leaf bagging requirement for this year.

Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor said this week all restrictions on the depositing of
leaves, brush, tree limbs and other debris created by the storm on curbsides for pickup have been lifted.

Town crews—and a small army of hired contractors—will begin picking up any debris from curbsides on November 19 and expect to complete all pickups townwide by early December.

“People have enough to do with their lives now, they don’t need to be worrying about how to get rid of debris from the storm,” Mr. Gregor said. “We’re going to have the payloaders out scooping everything up anyway and we’re going to have to hire a ton of contractors to assist us so it doesn’t make sense to have people bag their leaves.”

Brush does not need to be separated by type or size but the highway department is asking that tree limbs and trunks be cut into pieces no longer than eight feet in length.

The town asks that debris piles be kept away from storm drains and fire hydrants.

Mr. Gregor said that the town has not yet made a decision on picking up non-vegetation related items, like appliances and carpeting, that were destroyed by the storm and must be discarded. Such items should be kept separate from yard debris.
