Five Mariners Hit Double Figures In Win Over Hampton Bays

Dec 16, 2013 1:05 PM

It was about as good a start to the season as they could hope.

The Southampton boys basketball team was dominant in a 93-35 win at Hampton Bays on Friday, in what was the League VII opener for both teams. The Mariners had five players score in double figures, and jumped out to a 49-16 halftime lead thanks to scoring 33 points in the second quarter.

Southampton head coach Herm Lamison said his players were eager to get the season under way, and added that the players who were on the varsity last season were particularly ready to shake off the memories of a tough loss to Babylon in the county final last year.

“I thought our kids came out and were very hungry to get going,” Lamison said. “I thought we came out with a lot of good energy and we executed the things we’ve been working on.

“We just wanted to try to increase the pressure and hopefully the pressure would lead to some easier baskets, which it did,” Lamison added.

Shaundell Fishburne led all scorers with 26 points and five steals, while Taylor Sanders had 17 points and six rebounds. Lyle Smith had 16 points, Nitauke Williams had 12 and Isaiah Johnson had 10. Phil DiPierdomenico led Hampton Bays with 14 points.

“I’m hoping we can maintain that kind of balanced scoring,” Lamison said. “It just makes it that much more difficult to defend.”

Southampton was slated to begin a tougher stretch, with games against league foes Mercy, Babylon and Center Moriches on the horizon. The Mariners will take on Center Moriches in the first round of the SYS Holiday Classic this weekend, at Southampton, and the consolation and championship games will be played at East Hampton High School. Center Moriches is in the tournament this year, replacing Bridgehampton. The Killer Bees were forced to drop out after a new team, the Knox School, was added to its league, thus restricting the number of non-league games Bridgehampton can play.

ON THE SCHEDULE: Tuesday, 12/17, vs. Mercy, 6:15 p.m., Friday, 12/20, at Babylon, 6:15 p.m.; Saturday, 12/21, vs. Center Moriches, 8 p.m.; Sunday, 12/22, second day, SYS Holiday Classic, at East Hampton, 2:30 or 5:45 p.m.; Saturday, 12/28, at St. Joseph’s College tournament, 5:45 p.m.
