Two Chances To Meet Candidates In Southampton Special Election

Richard Yastrzemski and Julie Lofstad
Jan 12, 2016 2:18 PM

Southampton Town taxpayers will have two opportunities to hear from the two candidates running for Brad Bender’s former seat on the Town Board in the special election on January 26.

The first event is being sponsored by The Southampton Press and 27East.com on Saturday, January 16, at 1 p.m. at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill. The event will feature a unique “conversation” format, in which Executive Editor Joseph P. Shaw will discuss several key topics with both Democrat Julie Lofstad and Republican Richard Yastrzemski in front of an audience.

The event will not have time limits on answers, giving both candidates a chance to delve deeper into the issues, including water quality and zoning changes. The conversation will be guided by Mr. Shaw, who has solicited questions submitted from various citizen groups before the event.

The audience will not be allowed to ask questions at the event itself, but suggested questions can be submitted in advance to mailbag@pressnewsgroup.com.

The second event will be a debate hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons on Thursday, January 21, at 7 p.m. at the Westhampton Free Library.

The format for the evening will include timed opening and closing statements from both Ms. Lofstad and Mr. Yastrzemski. The two candidates will also field questions from a panel of local media representatives, the League of Women Voters, and the audience. Estelle Gellman of the League of Women Voters will moderate the event.

More information on the debate can be found at lwvhamptons.org, or by calling 324-4637.
