Zeldin Proposal On North Shore Helicopter Route Signed By President Trump

The Federal Aviation Administration will have to reevaluate the North Shore Route of helicopters. JON WINKLER

Helicopter noise on the East End will be reevaluated by the Federal Aviation Administration thanks to President Donald Trump and U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin.

On October 5, President Trump signed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, which included a proposal by Mr. Zeldin that requires the Federal Aviation Administration to reassess the North Shore helicopter route.

The route has caused residents in Southampton, East Hampton and Riverhead to issue complaints about excessive noise caused by helicopters flying in and out of the area on a frequent basis.

Mr. Zeldin’s proposal requires the FAA to address the noise impact of the route on local communities, improve altitude enforcement and consider alternative routes, including a route set entirely over the Atlantic Ocean. It also requires the FAA to hold a public hearing and welcome public comment on the current route in communities that have complained about the noise.

The act was first passed by the Senate on October 3 and the House of Representatives the week before.

“No longer can the FAA ignore the concerns of residents as they have from the North Shore route’s planning to its continued use, while day to day quality of life has suffered due to the persistent issue of helicopter noise on the East End,” Mr. Zeldin said in a press release. “Finally, the FAA is forced to listen. I thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for supporting this legislation and the President for signing this important proposal into law.”

Multiple local officials added comments supporting Mr. Zeldin’s proposal and its movement through the house.

East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc said national government attention to the helicopter noise problem was “appreciated” and “warranted,” while Shelter Island Supervisor Gary Gerth called the noise problem “one of the most important issues for the residents of Shelter Island, who have been adversely impacted by persistent helicopter noise.”

Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith pointed out how helicopter noise during the summer season had “exponentially increased” over the last several years. “These helicopters tend to fly the same routes when navigating overland resulting in helicopters passing overhead every 5 to 10 minutes,” Ms. Jens-Smith said. “The noise created is so loud and disturbing that it can drown out your TV, or even shake pictures off your wall if you are inside. And outside is even worse, requiring you to stop your conversations until after the helicopters have passed.”

Southampton Village Mayor Michael Irving said on Friday that the issue involves helicopters not following the designated route and becoming “obnoxious.” “Every year it’s increased because the population increases,” Mr. Irving said. “The issue pops up from time to time.”

This issue has been ongoing for a very long time. Where was Zeldin before this? It is quite ironic that the pressure of a close election coming up, gets him to finally do something. He is obviously concerned about losing based on just his record alone. This is the very same reason that he is afraid

So the rabidly die hard Democrats who were demanding that the routes be changed will have to thank a Republican Congressman and President Trump for stepping up to get it done. I can hear the heads exploding now.

As long as the routes are changed I don't think any one would really care whodunnit. Let's hope the bags of wind don't blow it down to the South Fork. They have enough problems there already.

Let's see if trump changes the helicopter routes like he promised to build that WALL, the one Mexico was going to pay for - Oh, one second, they didn't build that wall. How about the one where trump was going to show his tax return - Oh, he didn't do that either.

localEH, I think you should email George W Bush and see if he will tell you the "fools" quote.

This is about an improvement for the people on the east end that has been going on for a long time. Yet Speed Racer and others will make it more about division and negativity. FAA could not get it done, now it will get done.

Not to clear what the Atlantic route entails. Will they have to fly way out over the ocean or will be allowed to hug the coast as many currently do and thereby just shifting the noise to the beaches?

A page out of the Incumbent Handbook. Deliver the goods and make the announcement in the month just before an election. Announce more funding for vets, and law enforcement. To fight gangs or dredge a canal. We haven't seen this many announcements from Mr Zeldin since October 2016!
hamptonsfinds is correct. The timing is fortuitous for Mr Zeldin is it not?
And why won't he debate his opponent?

Let's say your neighbor has kept a loud barking dog in the backyard for 4 years. The neighbor says he might put the dog inside at some future date. The neighbor is a hero?

Maybe this Vote for a Vet phony can get his master to better fund local vets programs and hospitals. If he really cared about vets he would have stayed on the House Veterans Committee rather than switching to Financial Services to position himself for higher campaign contributions. Oh, you think that wasn't the reason ...more

Reassessment is not actually changing the route. This Trump-Zeldin “solution” is no more than the tired old expedient of referring a nettlesome matter to a “study committee.”

There is absolutely no gurantee that the feds will do anything at all to change the route. This is just Big Donald doing a favor for his friend Little Lee right before an election, to make it look like Little Lee is doing something about a longstanding problem when he really isn’t, and ...more
