Cars Collide On County Road 39 On Saturday

May 21, 2019 4:17 PM

A two-car collision took place Saturday around 3 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 39 and Hills Station Road in Shinnecock Hills, resulting in lane closures and one minor injury, according to Southampton Town Police.

Police said Ricardo Sobrevinas, 17, of Southampton struck a vehicle driven by Stewart Mead, 75, of Flanders. Mr. Mead’s vehicle rolled over, but he was unharmed. Mr. Sobrevinas suffered minor injuries and was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, police said. There were no other passengers.

Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph said that the accident caused lanes to shut down but did not have further information on which lanes were closed and for how long.

No citations were issued, police said.

Same ol' . . . same ol' . . .

Add stop lights at every major intersection from Hill Station Road to the Napeague Stretch, and have them timed to permit ONLY traffic which follows the posted speed limits.

Route 5 south of Hartford CT had this for decades [before the Interstates], and the terrible commute traffic for the insurance industry was able to travel on this four-lane [not divided] highway with a minimum of accidents. Yes, travel slowly but it moved along alright.

Anticipating ...more

There seems to be major resistance to adding some additional traffic lights on CR 39 because of the supposed back-ups they will create. Lights already exist at several locations, so one or two more synched to the existing ones shouldn't create an inconvenience for anyone. There needs to be safer ingress and egress to and from this dangerous road.

They already are timed.

Speeding traffic negates it.

Actually here's a fun one! If you're heading west from Sandy Hollow towards N McGee.. If you DON'T do at least 50 MPH, you'll get stuck at that light, immediately after being stuck @ Sandy Hollow. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I'm willing to bet $$$ that's part of the reason why that motorcycle rider has a memorial on that corner of N Mcgee. Johnson Controls doesn't care.

The last sentence is where you went wrong. The controls are there to slow traffic down and create a safe condition. Johnson controls cannot be held responsible for the idiotic and reckless conduct of vehicle operators. Looking at what remained of the motorcycle, and as someone who does ride, I would not rule out that the operator of the motorcycle was misbehaving as well. However I have not personally seen the accident report either.

Speed cameras everywhere, fewer intersections. This is not rocket science.

Not the safest road in the world, but the road does not drive the cars.

Why don't the police do anything about speeding on this road? Because they're afraid to slow traffic? Is that really a plausible reason not to sit there with a radar gun and ticket every single one?
By Hillsnbells (43), Southampton on May 20, 19 3:16 PM
The logistics of writing a few thousand tickets in one afternoon/evening?

ZERO TOLERENCE SPEED ENFORCEMENT!!! I agree with Mr Z on this one, it's the idiots behind the wheel that are the cause of every single accident on 39, slow the F down, don't text and drive , pull your head out of yer arses , slow the F DOWN.
