Shinnecock Territory Shooting Suspect Taken Into Custody

Aug 27, 2019 4:53 PM

A suspect in a fatal shooting on the Shinnecock Indian Nation territory earlier this month was arrested in North Carolina two days after the murder.

Michael Gaines, 42, was arrested on August 18 in Pitt County, North Carolina, after police said he broke into a vehicle, a felony charge. He is being held without bond on a New York parole violation fugitive warrant and will be sent to New York once the extradition process is complete, according to a press release from New York State Police.

Mr. Gaines is currently being held at the Pitt County Detention Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

On August 16, Mtundo Vanterpool, a 43-year-old, non-Shinnecock man living on the reservation, was shot and killed at around 5:30 a.m. The motive and details of the incident have not been made public. State Police had been looking for Mr. Gaines, as they believed he had information regarding the investigation.

State Police confirmed in the press release, which was sent out on August 22, six days after the incident, that Mr. Gaines was a suspect in the shooting.

Mr. Gaines was living on the Shinnecock reservation at the time of the incident, although he was not a member of the tribe.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for more information.
