Southampton Town Pledges To Participate In Car Free Day

Sep 18, 2019 10:43 AM

Southampton Town Board members are encouraging people to ditch their cars and take public transportation or another alternative form of transportation to get to work on Friday.

According to a press release from the town, at least 2,800 municipalities around the world participate in Car Free Day each year to not just raise awareness of the various available options to get around town, but to also reduce their carbon footprint; the town pledged to do the same.

In March, town officials from Southampton and East Hampton, along with the Long Island Rail Road and state and local officials, launched the Long Island Rail Road South Fork Commuter Connection — additional rail service on the South Fork between Speonk and Montauk — to help get people to work.

The LIRR added two eastbound and westbound trains in the morning and afternoon, opening more options to people, and the towns worked with the state to get buses from the Hampton Jitney and Hampton Hopper to provide transportation from the train station to points around town, getting people closer to their place of employment.

The town also worked with Suffolk County to get a bike share program in Hampton Bays. The program is operated by Zagster, and bikes have strategically been placed throughout the hamlet so people can move around on a bicycle instead of by car.

New bike paths are also expected to be installed in Hampton Bays between Main Street, Good Ground Park and Red Creek Park.

“We encourage everyone to take the train to work on September 20 and hop on one of the buses that meet passengers at the railroad station,” Southampton Town Board member Tommy John Schiavoni said in the press release. “Give the South Fork Commuter Connection a try for just that one day — I think you might find it is a convenient alternative to sitting in traffic.”

A simple poll of town employees riding the train should approximate the percentage of east end office workers using the train. This figure should be made public and used by MTA to tweak the service.
