Nov 14, 2019 3:03 PMThis morning at 8:35 a.m. the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, AMSEAS, received a report of a deceased humpback whale washed up on the surf of Halsey Neck Lane in Southampton. The AMSEAS team arrived on the scene around 10:45 a.m. and began examining the whale-- they will complete the necropsy this afternoon.
Responders said the whale is a juvenile female 27.5 ft long and underweight.
The AMSEAS team will work with the Southampton Village Highway Department, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries, the New York State Department of Conservation, and the Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue team to complete necropsy.
According to AMSEAS, this is the 13th largest whale and 7th largest humpback MASEAS has responded to this year. They say an unusual mortality event, or UME, has been affecting the humpback whale population since 2016.
