Throne-Holst And Team Release Campaign Video

Oct 27, 2011 7:37 AM

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and her running mates, Democratic Councilwoman Bridget Fleming and Independent Town Board-hopeful Brad Bender, introduced a unique campaign advertising strategy last week by releasing a professional video on the web to broadcast their slate’s message.

But the Southampton Town Republican Committee fired back on Tuesday, claiming the video violates town code because it features scenes of town facilities in a campaign piece. The GOP filed a complaint with the town’s Ethics Board on Tuesday, according to Chairman William Wright.

Titled “People, Not Politics” the nearly 11-minute-long video, filmed like a “micro doc,” according to a statement released by Democratic Committee member Hank Beck, stars community members and local lawmakers talking about what they love about Southampton Town. At the same time, it makes a pitch to elect the three candidates to keep town government in the hands of “people, not politics.”

The video begins with Ms. Throne-Holst talking about her family. An early scene depicts her jogging down the beach; others show her driving and conducting business by hands-free phone, and at Town Hall. The video also includes pictures of her three sons Nic, Sebastian and Max; and Karess Taylor-Hughes, who, she said is not her foster daughter “in the traditional sense” but has lived with her for the last eight years. “Let’s say I call her my daughter and she calls me Mom,” she said.

It wasn’t feasible to tell their story through traditional campaign advertising, Ms. Throne-Holst said, which is why the three turned to the New York City film production company GoShow Entertainment, which, under the direction of William Goins, created the film. The company was paid $15,000 to produce the video—the largest expense of Ms. Throne-Holst’s campaign committee.

“The situation in Southampton Town certainly mirrors the national scene in terms of its incessant partisanship,” Mr. Goins said in the statement. “The supervisor, who leads the board and is a woman, is in the political minority. She is a popular figure—challenged only by a write-in candidate for her second term—but her efforts are often thwarted by the political muscle of the majority, even in the face of public outcry.”

When interviewed on Monday, Ms. Throne-Holst said the video, which was released last Thursday, has already received more than 600 hits. “I think that our story is more than your traditional ad,” she said. “I think that our story is, we are not career politicians, we are not in it to represent a political party or platform, that we come at it with a very different set of experiences. We come at it as professionals.”

Republican Party officials this week offered biting comments on the campaign piece. Former Town Supervisor Linda Kabot, who is running a write-in campaign against Ms. Throne-Holst, called it a “puff piece.”

“I expected more substance,” Ms. Kabot said. “I think the film, overall, is over the top. It’s silly, and I very much feel it’s not a good use of campaign funds for a whopping $15,000.”

Marietta Seaman, the former vice chairwoman of the party, echoed similar sentiments. Asked what she thought of the film, she replied, “That Anna wants to be a movie star.”

“I don’t know what jogging down the beach has to do with a being a supervisor,” she added.

Democratic Committee Chairman Gordon Herr defended the film and called the GOP’s ethics complaint “pathetic.”

“To me, it shows just how desperate the Republicans are, that they have to resort to this type of tactic to get some kind of publicity,” Mr. Herr said.

Wow! I'd forgotten how absolutely fabulous Anna is! Dashing from her waterfront villa for a brisk jog on the beach, zipping around in her little European sports car, looking totally put-together at town board meetings! How does she do it??????? And I'm even more impressed that, for all practical purposes, she's the daughter of a Swedish knight. So cool! Only in the Hamptons could we find a person of her immense caliber and charisma to run for office! Anna, thank you for your sacrifice!

I really hate to say this - not being in SH politics but seeing enough in East Hampton - the "a woman" pronouncement in this ad (which could pay for a part-time civil servant position) is so over the top - it's not as if we are all stupid and don't recognize that, and it's not as if she's the FIRST woman supervisor to hit the East End . . . and, from what I can see and read she's probably one of least "smart" who relies on the "career politicians" she claims she is "not among" to float her boat ...more

Before seeing the video I was neutral on Anna. But she is so condescending, talking about her family royalty, acting in the video like she's curing cancer at every turn, breathlessly saving the town from ruin on a daily basis - give me a break and get over yourself.

All I want is some code enforcement in my neighborhood to get rid of some of eyesores; jogging on the beach is all well and good but come on, it's about delivering services. I find it ironic that the Republican write in candidate seems to have the working folks in mind while Democrat ATH seems focused on the Hamptons glitz.

I think as a propaganda piece it has its roots in Leni Riefensthal's "Triumph of the Will". Not sure how appropriate it is in a Town Supervisor/Town Board election, but I am certain it is a great ego boost. I will simply say this: We felt very strongly that the film, made in the midst of this campaign, is a newsworthy event, primarily because it's the first real foray into the medium in any significant way--and the primary expense incurred by the supervisor in her reelection campaign. Most importantly, the whole film said nothing as she claimed credit for all of the good budget work that Linda Kabot had put in place while still Supervisor. Now that's chutzpah! More significantly, we see a person who has yet to deal with her overinflated sense of her own omnipotence.

I believe you have your information wrong. It was one highway employee using her own car (not town vehicles) stuffing a campaign letter into mail boxes. I also believe it violated some postal law not town law.
This video is a another story and may violate the towns ethic code.
Oct 27, 11 8:00 PM appended by reg rep
CORRECTION THE PERSON STUFFING THESE MAILBOXES WAS NOT A HIGHWAY EMPLOYEE AND DID NOT USE ANY TOWN CARS THE PERSON STATING THAT IS WRONG Two Eastport residents complained last week about campaign fliers supporting highway superintendent candidate John McGann appearing in their mailboxes without the U.S. Postal Service’s help. At least two unstamped fliers for Mr. McGann’s campaign were placed in Eastport mailboxes on September 18—apparently in violation of federal law, which prohibits unpaid mail to be left in people’s private mailboxes.

It didn't happen CommonSense is incorrect. It seems back in 2008 fliers were put in mailboxes in Eastport and residents complained to the post office. Federal law prohibits unpaid mail to be left in people's private mailboxes. It was not a highway employee nor was any town car used.

So more folks can be in violation of the ethics code! Gee, Anna, not enough to violate it yourself, now you want others to join you. Right! What does the town attorney say about that. Guess anna thinks two wrongs make a right. Some supervisor. Sounds like its time to elect a supervisor who will enforce town laws, not break them.

I saw the October 28th meeting on Channel 22. It seems bizarre that Ms. Throne -Holst would give the keys to the Town hall to anyone who wanted to create a video in the Town Hall. I think she is confused, the keys to the Town have been given to her as the temporary holder of the key's, her goal is supposed to be to protect the taxpayer, not to give the key's for the town Hall away to her friends. As a taxpayer I do not want anyone using MY TOWN HALL as a political advertisement, even if you are ...more

This is for Joe Shaw..
This is the way I understood what you stated above, why the film was a newsworthy event
An editorial decision was made because this type of campaign video has never been done before? Also, because $30,000 (primary expense) was spent on this video which was the biggest campaign expense by ATH.
You also stated that this should in no way be seen as any kind of endorsement.
I will believe that statement when this paper announce's their endorsement for supervisor. ...more

Yes, Reg rep, anyone who disagrees with you is actually Anna Throne Holst in disguise. Progressnow is wrong. You do not need to get over yourself, you need to get over your obsession with ATH. It is a bit frightening to be honest. By the way, I think your caps lock must be jammed.

For what it's worth, we will not be endorsing in the supervisor's race this year, because the incumbent is unopposed on the ballot. That is our policy.

I was wondering if that was the case. Thanks.

Some of you really need to listen yourselves. I understand that people are very passionate about the direction and future of our town but some of the things said here are just silly. "Bridget should distance herself from Anna" if that was an intelligent move in any way for Bridget she would do just that. Instead it appears she's choosing to remain associated with the incumbent who won (I believe) every single voting district last time around (possible that I am wrong here and feel free to correct). ...more

That's not a bad analysis -- as far as you go, SW.

But it utterly begs the issue of why ATH lied about the late night telephone conversation with a member of the Town Police force. How does one overlook that troubling lack of forthrightness?

Remember, Nixon could have finished out his second term if he and his crew hadn't lied from the onset.

It is, Mr. Wheeler, as you point out, a matter and question of character. We can accept that our elected officials are no more flawless than we ourselves are. We cannot and should not accept in our elected officials those character flaws that demean us, regardless of our party affiliations. Anna Throne-Holst has exhibit both in public and privately to me, character flaws which to me disqualify her from the holding of public office. She lies, she threatens those who oppose her, she believes she ...more

What you stated could be fair commets but you left out so many pieces to the puzzle. I don't know how long you have followed this saga, so I will post some info and questions for you to fill in the blanks you left out and try to educate you on how a conspiracy could very well have taken place.
1. Are you aware of the events that took place with the SH Town PBA when Linda was Supervisor.

"4. Do you really think that the call the then president of the PBA made to Anna in the middle of the night was just a supporter of her's giving her the news?"

I could possibly believe this if not for the lie. Anyone could have called, the lying is what makes it so curious. Why not say, yeah, they called no idea Why?
By bb (922), Hampton Bays on Nov 2, 11 1:21 PM
OK Neil, I actually agree with much of what you say except the following, "Linda Kabot who survived false and politically motivated DWI accusation". The Village of WHB police had no beef with Linda Kabot. The video showed that she coasted through a stop sign and crossed the center line and admitted to having "i am thinking of two glasses of wine" as she put it. That right there is all the justification in the world to question if she was impaired or not and the WHB officers frankly did the only ...more

Reg Rep, I think that you also bring up some good points. And yes, it would be pretty clear for anyone to see that i'm not quite as blown away by Kabot's "integrity" as other on this board. And yes I do plan to vote for Anna Throne-Holst for Supervisor. That being said, I chose only to actually contribute to this board, which I have followed for some time, after I felt that many of the comments I was reading were simply unfair and needed to be questioned.

As for the support of the PBA, ...more
By SayWhat (14), Southampton on Nov 2, 11 12:00 PM
SayWhat, you may be well intentioned, but are somewhat misinformed. Not a single member of the PBA is affected by the proposed lay-offs, only Superior Officers. Not exactly a profile in political courage, nor a showing of care about the best interest of the town. Some might even argue that it benefits the members of the PBA by opening promotional slots for them. It is just another in a series of calculated political gambits on the Supervisor's part. It behooves us all to look beneath the veneer ...more

Neil you are correct with your reply to SayWhat. I would like to add that ATH has had the support from the PBA and I'm not talking about the endorsements. I'm talking about the campaign donations that by the way were over the amount allowed by law.

By getalife (61), Southampton on Nov 14, 11 5:08 PM
Wow. This isn't a joke? It should be on SNL. This is the most embarassing thing I've seen since that David Hasselhoff video of him on the floor eating a cheeseburger...actually, at least he had an excuse...he was intoxicated. Let's start a poll - who is more pathetic - Jay Schneiderman or Anna? I'll leave Brad and Bridget out of it since they seem like nice people. Actually forget it, I won't wind up reading the results anyway.
