Woman Struck By Car On Montauk Highway In Hampton Bays

Nov 17, 2010 10:25 AM

A 78-year-old woman had to be rushed to the hospital on Friday morning after she was struck by a car on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, according to Southampton Town Police.

Police said Rebecca Elfant of Manhattan was hit at around 11 a.m., just west of the entrance to the Villa Paul Italian restaurant, as she was attempting to cross the street. Police said they did not know where she was coming from or heading to at the time of the accident.

She was transported by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was treated for undisclosed injuries, according to authorities. The extent of her injuries was not released.

Police said Ms. Elfant was hit by a 2009 Hyundai being driven by 84-year-old Vincent Pepi of Hampton Bays as he was making a left turn from Lamplight Circle onto Montauk Highway. Investigators said Mr. Pepi told them that Ms. Elfant walked out in front of his car.

The right westbound lane of Montauk Highway, just east of Route 24, was temporarily
closed as paramedics treated
Ms. Elfant. She was loaded into the back of the ambulance at around 11:20 a.m. and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Didn't someone get killed crossing there a year or two or three ago? I think it was at night.
I know that stretch of road has a lot of accidents.
The town just lowered the speed limit to 30mph in much of downtown HB. I think it should be 25 like in other downtowns and maybe until people get used to it they could have one of those electronic signs there that tell you how fast you are going.
People get off 27 or 24 with those higher speed limits and it takes them awhile to adjust mentally ...more

Very dangerous crossing...should be 30mph. It is also very dark...
cars race towards the intersection. Pedestrians don't have a chance...

Very sad this accident occured, however, it was 11:00 in the morning--broad daylight. And "just west of the Villa Paul Restaurant" which is the Town and Country apartment complex. Getting in & out of there can be a nightmare, but people still insist on trying to make the left turn out of there to head east, across four lanes of traffic. People stop short to make the turn in there at the last minute. There's just too much traffic, going at too fast a speed in that area. I agree with Kayleesh; ...more

what a shame a older woman can not cross a road. one or two car's can't yield for one minute.

they need a traffic light and crosswalk at the entrance to town and country with the camera that spots a car then changes the signal this way it will not change unless necessary and the button to push for the pedestrians. This all makes sense so the town will never do it

Well, seeing as it is a County Road, you're right. The town won't do anything about it.

There is a crosswalk & light at the Church. Surely you don't think there should be yet another light between the church & the Diner? When I drove past the man's car was still in the driveway. He had a right directional on. If she had walked down to a crosswalk he wouldn't have hit her. Too many cars to be jaywalking.

The crosswalk from the medical centers pretty far up the road for an older person.
God bless Ms Elfant -get well soon!

There is a crosswalk at the church. I realize that it is tough for an elderly person but I am not sure that yet another stop light is going to help. You'll never get down Montauk & you'll have even more people running the lights. It's a bad spot

Very sad...it is a very bad intersection...cars race out of the shell gas station across 4 lanes...I have seen this many times...people try to get out of the Dr office and Friendlys at the same time...insane. I think this intersection was made worse by the McD's and Stop and Shop....who were supposed to improve the intersection. It is better for cars....but you cannot cross as a pedestrian.

Wow...all people do is complain about high taxes, yet you want to ADD more traffic lights to an already congested intersection? How about people just smarten up and learn how to cross a road? I swear, people are getting more and more stupid.

Also, why is it that when any illegal or old person gets hit by a car, everyone blames the intersection? How about blaming the moron who walked in front of a car?

You are blaming an older women for getting hit in an intersection? Wow...she is a 78 yr old women..
Do you have a mother? A grandmother? How dare you!
White Trash!!

I am sorry for the white trash comment...
The last comment just got the better of me and made me angry...
This was a 78 yr old women...you are calling a moron? Where you raised by wolves?
If anyone, she has the right to cross this intersection.
If she is an older person in our community, she is walking up the road from the medical centers behind the shell station.
Put yourself in her place...
Good luck when your 78

Two lanes going east and two lanes going west are reduced to singel lanes in this area, drivers jockey for positions driving far above the speed limit, perhaps a speed camera installed on that section of road may get the attention of these drivers, and of course NO left turn signs should be implemented on that strech of road,

78 is old enough to know how to cross a road and to watch out for cars. Sure, she has the right to cross the intersection, but being 78 doesn't mean a car will stop any faster for her. Come on, a little common sense and this could have been avoided.

My understanding is the person who hit her was pulling out of the apartments next to Villa Paul. I'd imagine she was crossing to his right, he was looking left to make the right. I don't know, but I think that may have been what happened. Very sad.

Oops, just reread the article he was making a left. Anyway, she wouldn't have been in his direct line of vision.
