Man Attempts Suicide On Ponquogue Bridge Sunday Morning

Jul 5, 2016 11:47 AM

A man described by police as having a history of emotional issues tried to commit suicide on Sunday morning by cutting his wrist and then jumping off the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays.

Southampton Town Police said the man, whom they are not identifying, survived the fall to the water, and a passing boater attempted to rescue him—but police said the man refused to get in the boat.

The suicide attempt was also witnessed by a person on the bridge who alerted police. Police did not provide a time of the incident.

The captain of a Sea Tow marine towing boat who was in the area then arrived on the scene and was able to convince the man to get out of the water, according to authorities.

The Sea Tow boat was met by Southampton Town bay constables who transported the man back to shore and to a waiting ambulance. He was treated for his physical injuries and then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Police said the man is someone they have had prior contact with, noting that he has tried to hurt himself before.

Clearly didn't grow up here. Locals jump that bridge as a right of passage. No deaths to my knowledge. ..

Had never heard of the guy. Googled him. Jumped off a ferry in NYC.

So, uhh, no? Still zero deaths to my knowledge..

I think the bigger picture here is that with repeated police contact of this nature, he still isn't in treatment.

Nothing can force him to stay in any type of emergency psychiatric place. If he signs out after the 24-48 mandated stay he's free to go...
By 1640sWhaler (74), Sag Harbor/Easthampton on Jul 3, 16 6:38 PM
there is no more mandate.... used to be 72 hours but now you say the right thing ur released

Psychiatric care out here is pathetic. Eastern LI Hospita lwith only "local" psych ward is like something out of "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" only disgustingly dirty and shabby. Then try to get a psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner who can provide follow-up meds and you will want to slit your own wrists!
Don't blame the victim. It is nearly impossible to get someone adequate help.

Out of curiosity you said don't blame the victim. What exactly is he a victim of? He threw himself off a bridge.

I hope he gets help but can we stop overusing/misusing words until they become completely meaningless. There are real victims out there that play no role in the harm that comes to them.

SlimeAlive is def a fitting name for you . Only a loser would make a joke about this situation. U should be ashamed of yourself in a very big way!!!

Some of these comments are heartless. This guy needs help and hopefully finds it. It's very difficult to help an adult who is either suicidal or mentally ill. You can't force them to do anything if they want to do what they want to do.

Where in the article does it say he was mentally ill? Guy sounds like he needs a good swift kick in the touchas. As if anyone has time for more stunts like this from an attention seeker.

It doesn't say he was mentally ill SlimeAlive, but some of the posters seem to know who this guy is and that he HAS mental illness issues. Mental health reform is desperately needed.

You dolts make a lot of sense. Spend your days wallowing away on a site that allows for alternative points of view then announce your intolerance of other points of view. If this clown was actually suciidal we would be reading an obituary. He's just annoying.
