Duryea's Lobster Deck In Montauk Will Remain For Another Year

Duryea’s Lobster Deck and Seafood Market in Montauk will remain open for another year, according to owner Perry Duryea III.

Mr. Duryea was planning to close up shop at the end of this year, having sold the property, which had been listed for sale at nearly $6 million, in May. But thanks to a very good summer season and the time it will take for the new owner to turn the property around for a high-end seafood restaurant, Mr. Duryea decided to hang on just a bit longer.

“It will be the same format as in years past,” he said, saying his retail wholesale and packaged ice business will remain. “We’re gearing up for the holiday trade with retail seafood.”

New next year, customers will have the option of tying up their boats at Duryea’s newly constructed dock adjacent to the Lobster Deck.

Mr. Duryea still will not release the name of the new owner of the property, but he did say that the new owner plans to take the restaurant in a different direction.

“It will be very understated,” Mr. Duryea said about the planned seafood restaurant. “It will be very nice. I’ve seen renderings. It’s going to be lovely and conform with the landscape. It’ll be very appropriate for this setting.”

The Duryeas’ 9-acre property has 650 feet of shoreline on Fort Pond Bay and underwater rights on both sides of a 200-foot pier, according to its listing on The Corcoran Group’s website.

The buildings are about 8,000 square feet, which includes lobster tank rooms, seafood packing areas, a retail seafood area, working coolers and freezers, office space, and two retail shops. There is also a 1,400-square-foot deck that seats 70. The Lobster Deck is known for its view of the sunset and its lobster rolls, lobster salads and steamed lobsters.

The house Mr. Duryea grew up in was also a part of the sale. He said the house originally belonged to his grandfather, Perry Duryea Sr., who came to Montauk in the 1920s and started the distribution business in the 1930s. His father, Perry Duryea Jr., who was later a member of the New York State Assembly, came back in 1949 after World War II. Perry Duryea III came back in 1974 after finishing graduate school. He said the three generations equal 85 years in Montauk.

Perry B. Duryea & Son Inc. has been in the wholesale seafood business since the 1930s, catching and selling live Maine and Canadian lobster, fresh fish, Long Island hard clams, and Maine shellfish.

During the offseason, Duryea’s will open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until 5 p.m. Duryea’s outdoor Lobster Deck will open for business on a daily basis in the early spring as weather allows.

I see you are thinking of retiring .. Aww that's not fair. What will Fort Pond Bay do without a Duryea there? i so enjoyed my visit to your father's dock back in the 1950's. We took our kids all the way out there from our home in Southampton, let them look in the bins at the live lobsters, bought some of the beauties and went off to Hither Hills to set up our little barbecue. The kids had fun playing in the dunes and we all enjoyed our supper and the sunset in Montauk. Wonderful ...more
