UPDATE: Bicyclist In Stable Condition After Riding Into Back Of SUV

Jul 11, 2013 5:08 PM

Update: 10 a.m. Thursday

Police identified the bicyclist injured in a collision with an SUV on Montauak Highway yesterday as 72-year-old Benjamin Klapper of Quogue.

Mr. Klapper was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he is in stable condition with what Quogue Village Police Lieutenant Chris Isola described as a "possibly life-threatening" head injury.

Lt. Isola said Mr. Klapper was not hit by the black 2014 Chevy SUV, as was previously reported, but rather he rode into the back of the vehicle while it was standing on the side of the road.

Mr. Klapper was traveling eastbound along the side of Montauk Highway at about 12:30 p.m. when he collided with the SUV just east of County Road 104. The SUV belongs to 62-year-old Timothy Parrish of New York City, who had pulled off onto the shoulder to check something, Lt. Isola said.

Mr. Klapper, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, was conscious and seen moving before he was loaded into a Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance and taken to nearby Quogue Field Club to be taken by helicopter to Stony Brook's trauma center.

Quogue police and fire officials closed traffic on the road for about an hour while first responders tended to Mr. Klapper and investigated the scene, Lt. Isola said.

Because the incident was an accident, no criminal charges are being filed, he added.

Original story:

A bicyclist had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after being struck by an SUV on Montauk Highway in Quogue on Wednesday afternoon.

The unidentified male cyclist was hit at around 12:30 p.m., near the intersection of County Road 104, just west of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, according to witnesses.

The driver of the SUV has not been identified. Quogue Village Police Lieutenant Chris Isola was not immediately available for comment.

Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance Chief Dave McClure said an ambulance was dispatched to the scene at about 12:40 p.m. Quogue Village Police, who also responded to the scene, called for a medevac helicopter that later landed at the nearby Quogue Field Club to transport the injured man to the hospital.

The bicyclist was being treated for what Chief McClure described as non-life-threatening injuries. He said he could not identify the victim or disclose the nature of the injuries due to privacy laws.

At least he wasn't running a red light, or a stop sign like your average cyclist...
