Cyclist Airlifted To Stony Brook University Hospital After Crashing Into Pole On Dune Road

Jul 29, 2013 5:09 PM

A bicyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after crashing into a telephone pole on Dune Road in Quogue shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, injuring his neck and back.

The 28-year-old New York City man was riding his bike westbound when a bee stung his leg, the man's friend told police. The man swatted at the bee and while his head was down he accidentally rode into the pole, Quogue Village Police Sergeant Thomas Mullen said.

Police were called to the scene at 1:14 p.m., Mullen said. A Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance responded to the scene and took the man to the Quogue Field Club where a Suffolk County Police Helicopter picked him up to transport him to Stony Brook.

The man was picked up at about 2 p.m., Sgt. Mullen said, adding that the injuries were serious but not necessarily life threatening.

I have to ask again. Does everyone now just get medevaced for non life threatening injuries? I guess the local hospitals are not capable or not accesible by ambulance, either way they are rendered worthless...

Any falls from a motorcycle or bicycle require a medivac.

Southampton hospital does not have a trauma team and therefore patients who may have internal bleeding have to be airlifted where they can be treated immediately.

Motor vehicles accidents and falls from a height of greater than eight feet get an automatic ride in the helicopter as well.

He was probably airlifted to SB because of back and neck trauma, depending on how hit the pole.... Hope his injuries can heal quickly, with no long term damage...

Arnold, if you had back and neck trauma would you like to go to the local hospital or airlifted?

Was he wearing a helmet? Tired of seeing so many bareheaded cyclists tempting fate on the roads.
