Brush fire damages homes on Dune Road in Quogue

Apr 21, 2010 12:36 PM

QUOGUE—A brush fire charred several hundred feet of dunes along Dune Road in Quogue on Tuesday afternoon, scorching the exteriors of a few oceanfront houses, according to Quogue Fire Department Chief Chris Osborne.

Two trucks from the Quogue Fire Department and two trucks from the Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to the blaze at about 2:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, Mr. Osborne said. The fire started in some brush near 34 Dune Road and spread quickly through the dunes until it reached 40 Dune Road, according to Mr. Osborne.

Mr. Osborne said the fire was most likely caused by a discarded cigarette, although the matter is still under investigation by the Southampton Town Fire Marshal. No injuries were reported.

Flames reached eight to 10 feet in height, and scorched the decks and walkways of several homes along the shore, Mr. Osborne said. At one point, flames jumped onto the roof of a house at 38 Dune Road, blackening it.

Firefighters cleared out about two hours later, after dousing the brush fire, Mr. Osborne said. He said the blaze posed a challenge because it burned in the trough between the dunes.
