Developer Launches Online Petition For Remsenburg Subdivision

A local developer who is looking to garner support for a proposed subdivision that he hopes to build in Remsenburg is turning to the internet.

Remsenburg resident Lawrence Citarelli, who last year unveiled plans for a 17-home subdivision that he wants to construct on 23 acres that he owns just north of South Country Road, west of Nidzyn Avenue, has been circulating a petition on Facebook over the past two weeks and, thus far, has collected 150 signatures. As part of his project, called The Estates at Remsenburg, Mr. Citarelli plans to preserve 7 acres that currently feature three historic homes.

“The reason I started the petition is that, not only on a national level but in our own hamlet and town, there is a sense of self-proclaimed social elitism and political influence that are forces standing in the way of proposed economic and progressive growth,” Mr. Citarelli said.

He added that he has already forwarded a few of the signatures to the Southampton Town Planning Board.

Local residents have been locked in heated debate over where the entrance to the development should be located. Those living on South Country Road want the curb cut to be located on Nidzyn Avenue, while those on that block want it on South Country Road. Both groups have argued that the entrance would create a dangerous traffic situation and destroy the hamlet’s historic feel.

Mr. Citarelli said that former Southampton Town Councilwoman Sally Pope, the current president of the Remsenburg Association, and others in the community are attempting to derail his project. He alleges that they are holding private meetings and trying to use their political clout to sway the opinions of residents.

“Don’t throw stones through my glass, because I’ll throw a missile at you,” Mr. Citarelli said. “If they want a circus, I’ll make it a circus.”

Ms. Pope and other members of the association circulated a petition in the fall stating that they do not want the entrance located on South County Road and that they oppose the cluster housing. The petition, which featured more than 300 signatures, was presented to the town last summer and again in the fall.

Of Mr. Citarelli’s allegations, Ms. Pope said: “It’s ridiculous. I’m sorry that he feels this way.”

Do not let him build there are so many houses for sale we don't need any more. Just because he bought the property that does mean we have to let him build. Bad investment doesn't need to be bailed out by the rest of us. VOTE NO

Hey Maxwell: I think the property your home sits on would make a nice community garden.

Please don't interfere with the bulldozers knocking down your house. Stop being so selfish and whining about your need for "shelter". Think about the community's needs for a change, instead of clamoring on about "private property".

People should look at the plans. He has good plans for the lot which leaves 6-7 acres as open space. Not many builders would bother to do that. What the Remsenburg Assoc are objecting to is an entrance off South Country Road. The Remsenburg Assoc should spend their time dealing with things they have the expertise for such as asking their members who live on South Country Road to PLEASE arrange to clean their once white fencing facing South Country Road. There are a few fences near the Post Office ...more

@"Maxwell" - Do you hear yourself, "just becasue he bought do we have to LET him build on it" - What you are asking is does any property owner, you included kind sir, have the legal right to excercise your "as of right" use of your land...Which by the way our application is requesting ...more

Mr. Citarelli, yes, you have the right to build on land you purchased as long as it falls within current zoning restrictions and as long as it does not negatively impact your neighbors.

Perhaps your attitude - “Don’t throw stones through my glass, because I’ll throw a missile at you. If they want a circus, I’ll make it a circus" - is getting in your way.

@rburger - I wonder how you would feel is it were you who reached out to every civic organization prior to application to share your thoughts and plans and listen to the community concerns...Ina neighborly and tolerant fashion...only to receive, by a select few, a concerted effort of false and irresponsible information and rumor spreading et al...That said Mrs. Pope and some members of the RA have met this past Saturday ...more

Speaking of Remsenburg Association, when are you going to prune, as promised when planted, the trees you guys put up on South Phillips Ave? Every time I walk down that street I get home and my hat is gone? As you know, you simply cant rely on the mostly lazy homeowners. Sorry Larry, didnt mean to take this in a different direction. Thanks for the support ba...interestingly the same issue only larger applies to the preservation and maintenance of caretakers house, green house and so forth on our proejct...they want preservation but in the same breath do not want to be responsible to maintain it neither financially nor in time and energy...entitlement issues ...more

I see that 116 South Country Road is back on the market for more than $1mm than what Lawrence paid for it ($2.6mm and I believe it sold for $1.2mm 18 months ago). That's a pretty good chunk of change considering nothing has been done to improve the property.

This is all from memory so I can going ask for the exact sales history from my realtor friend.
