Fire destroys vacant building in downtown Riverhead

Aug 5, 2009 2:02 PM

A large fire completely destroyed a vacant industrial building in downtown Riverhead Tuesday night, according to the Riverhead Town Police Department.

There were no injuries caused by the blaze, the cause of which is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Squad.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded to a fire at the former Riverhead Building Supply building, located on the corner of Ostrander Avenue and Corwin Street, at around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters from the Quogue, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays and Flanders fire departments fought the blaze as well.

George Woodson, the chief of the Riverhead Fire Department, said that about 150 firefighters battled the blaze for two and a half hours. Most remained at the scene until 4 a.m. to make sure that the fire did not reignite.

“The smoke was so heavy you couldn’t see where you were,” Chief Woodson said.

Firefighters had to evacuate a number of homes near the burning building for about two hours, Mr. Woodson said. Service on the Long Island Rail Road was interrupted for about four hours because the blaze was near the tracks, he added.

The Riverhead Town fire marshal’s office is also investigating and has not yet determined the cause of the fire.
