Pierson students can earrn cheap college credits

Jan 14, 2009 1:45 PM

Students at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor will be able to earn as much as two semesters worth of college credits while taking high school Advanced Placement, or AP, courses next year, at a fraction of the cost a college would charge.

Superintendent Dr. John Gratto said Monday that students in Pierson’s AP classes will be able to earn between two and four college credits if they pass the AP course exam at the end of the year. The credits would be awarded to them by Suffolk County Community College for $50 per credit.

With 14 AP courses offered by the school, Dr. Gratto said that some students could earn between 30 and 45 credits toward college while at Pierson.

this article makes no sense.

AP credit is nothing new, even for pierson hs. its been around for years, and you can use the credits for lots of schools, not just suffolk community.

this article implies that AP college credit is something innovative that this Gratto guy is setting up, when in reality, the AP program has been around for years, nationally, and has nothing to do with him or the large salary he receives.

Nicole is right. This has been going on for years already, its not something new that Pierson has started. They do this in many schools in NYS already.

All of the schools in the area offer AP courses and other college credited courses. I hope that the communities will understand the importance of such programs and support the local districts and keep the courses rather than cutting them in these trying economic times. Kudos to our local school districts for offering such opportunities to our students.
