Nine rescued from sinking boat on Sunday

Aug 4, 2010 9:21 AM

A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued nine people from a sinking powerboat off Northwest Harbor in East Hampton on Sunday night.

An 18-inch-long crack in the hull caused the 19-foot-long Stingray to sink, according to Bill Barker, the owner of Seatow Eastern Long Island, which was contracted to salvage the boat after Coast Guard Station Montauk’s rescue. Mr. Barker said a Seatow crew responded at around 8 p.m., and just the bow of the boat was sticking out of the water by the time they arrived.

It is unclear if the boat hit something underwater or if the fiberglass just failed, Mr. Barker said, pointing out that it was a 1986 boat. The boat was brought back to Seatow’s facility in Southold, he added.

None of the nine people on the boat was injured, said Petty Officer Tom McKenzie of U.S. Coast Guard Public Affairs. There is no investigation into the incident, he said: “It was a pretty quick case.”

Besides the Coast Guard the Sag Harbor Harbormaster, East Hampton Marine Patrol and Shelter Island Bay Constables responded. The victims were transported to the Harbormasters office in 3 mile harbor by East Hampton Marine 1. Great job by all of our East End Law Enforcement

Barcelona boat party was in Sag Harbor Cove on Sunday, they might have come from there. overall there were hundreds of boats there, with a few idiots mixed in. kudos to the harbormaster, Southampton and east hampton bay constables, sherriff and shelter island police boat for dealing with the idiots while everyone had a good time.

i dont even think anyone was arrested or seriously injured. after the boat sinking i saw the southampton boat bring someone in to the dock who was burned, ...more

It figures, it was the Sag Harbor idiotfest 2010. Operator should've been ticketed.
