Bylaw Bars Local College Undergraduates From Joining Sag Harbor Fire Department

Feb 13, 2013 11:58 AM

A Sag Harbor Fire Department bylaw from the 1970s that prohibits local college undergraduates from joining the department has some members seeing red.

At Tuesday night’s Sag Harbor Village Board meeting, board members tabled a motion to allow Kevin J. Duchemin Jr., the son of Village Trustee Kevin J. Duchemin, to serve as an active probationary member of the Gazelle Hose Company No. 1 and be added to the insurance rolls.

Fire Department Secretary Robert Bori expressed disbelief that someone could be disqualified from joining the department simply because they attended a local college.

“We all went to Suffolk [County] Community College,” he said of himself and two other firefighters. “We got in under the same bylaw. I don’t see what the problem is.”

Mayor Brian Gilbride said the village has to adhere by the bylaw until the law is changed, despite the fact that other firefighters may have joined while attending a local college.

Mayor Gilbride said the bylaw will be looked at and most likely changed.

Everyone who knows the REAL situation knows that this is a PERSONAL issue. Good move Gilbride soon no one will volunteer and I doubt your gonna get out of bed in the middle of the night ,and run into a burning building..... And on a side note ..... I have a question for all you taxpayers out there ....... How can a person be out on FULL disability for a "back " injury yet still play golf.... ?

guess it all depends who you are...... seems kind of crazy to me. It is hard enough to get people to join a volunteer organization. Just saying if we have 3 men in this department that got in and went to Suffolk. What happens to them?
Maybe the mayor can comment on that.
