North Haven Mayor To Meet With PSEG To Discuss Grid Reinforcements

Jan 25, 2017 9:45 AM

The North Haven Village Board will hold a public hearing with PSEG Long Island officials at Village Hall on Friday at 11 a.m., to discuss a federally funded project that will reinforce the power grid in the North Haven area to make it more resilient in storms.

Work has not begun on the estimated 7-mile route that begins on Stony Hill Road, between Noyac and Brick Kiln roads, and winds its way up to the South Ferry dock. From there, the transmission line continues on to Shelter Island and ends where South Ferry Road meets Smith Street.

The work in Noyac also includes replacing wiring and poles, as well switching equipment, on Noyac-Long Beach Road, just south of Harbor Drive, and on Ferry Road, south of Fahys Road.

The upgrades currently call for contractors to install new and more durable wooden utility poles that feature stronger bases. They will be the same height as the current poles, ranging from 34 to 39 feet.

North Haven Village Mayor Jeff Sander said last week that he would prefer to have the electric lines buried instead of simply moved to more storm-resistant poles, and asked PSEG to suspend work until they can meet to discuss the possibility of burying the lines.

The project is being funded with more than $729 million in federal money secured in a 2014 agreement reached between Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. PSEG representatives could not specify how much of that money was being spent to bolster the South Fork’s power grid.

Given the Jeff's failure from square one to negotiate the preservation of the "Point House" the village should, perhaps, find someone up to the job of bargaining with PSEG.
