Murf’s Backstreet Tavern in Sag Harbor celebrated one last hurrah on Saturday, September 29.

The dive bar at 64 Division Street in the historic district of the Sag Harbor Village is in contract, according to Lee Minetree, a real estate broker at Saunders.

“The Murf’s family is sad to announce that tonight will be our last,” the Murf’s Facebook page “Fans of Murf’s” said on Saturday afternoon, inspiring a flood of fond memories and warm goodbyes.

Jay Hamel had purchased the pub-style bar from the original “Murf,” Tom Murphy, in 2007 for $850,000. Earlier this past summer, Sag Harbor Village Police and the State Liquor Authority cracked down on what police referred to as unruly activity frequently reported at the Sag Harbor hotspot.

Mr. Minetree confirmed the bar being on the market for $3.5 million in August, and a “For Sale” sign popped up later that month.

This week he said that the 770 square-foot building is currently under contract, but that further information could not be disclosed until the purchase is finalized.

The Murf’s building, which served as a restaurant in its early days, has historic value. According to Thomas Preiato, building inspector for the Village of Sag Harbor, it was originally built in 1792 and later moved to its current location.
