Sag Harbor School District Victim Of Cyber Attack On Monday

Nov 6, 2019 10:57 AM

On Monday, the Sag Harbor School District was the victim of a cyber attack that temporarily disabled its server and computer systems, according to an email sent out by district officials to parents and residents of the district.

The State Office of Information Technology Services and the Cyber Security Task Force have been contacted, according to the email.

Superintendent of Schools Katy Graves said on Monday that the system would be down for another 24 hours at least. Luckily, there was no school for students on Tuesday, November 5, as the day was a planned superintendent’s conference day for all faculty and staff.

Core BTS, a technology consulting organization, was at the school on Monday afternoon working on sifting through data and resolving the effects of the cyber attack.

As of Wednesday morning, the computer system was not fully back online.

“We’re verifying all of the information that comes in,” Ms. Graves said, adding that the teachers were able to do limited work on a select few computers on Wednesday.

Ms. Graves said she didn’t want to divulge additional information yet but will have an update for residents and parents once the issue is resolved.

Out of an abundance of caution, the district’s data was previously backed up and officials are working to restore the system. No data has been lost, and the district is working to determine if any confidential information has been compromised.

“We will provide updated information as soon as it is available,” the email, signed by Ms. Graves, reads.

I would guess (and hope) that this is the work of a student.

My money says a cryptolocker. Hopefully they have backups, and they work, which seems to potentially be the case as they’re keeping it on the hush. Don’t want to instill confidence in your backups, only for them not to work!
