Former Fairway Restaurant Owner Is One Of Two Poxabogue Bidders

Having had no luck the first two times it sought bids, Southampton Town, in its third attempt, received two bids to operate a restaurant at the Poxabogue Golf Center in Sagaponack—including one from the former owner of the restaurant there, who hopes to resurrect the Fairway Restaurant.

Southampton company T to Green, a firm owned by Daniel Murray, who ran the Fairway Restaurant at the golf center for 20 years, submitted one of the two bids, according to Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer. Mr. Murray closed down the restaurant last year after failing to reach an agreement on a new lease with the course’s manager, Ed Wankel, owner of Long 
Island Golf Management. Mr. Murray said last week that he submitted the bid on Tuesday, February 8, one day before the deadline, and was looking forward to re-creating the Fairway Restaurant.

The other bid came from Hamptons Eats LLC, an East Hampton company co-owned by David Kuperschmid and Gunnar Myers. When reached last Thursday, Mr. Kuperschmid said his company has operated restaurants in New York City and on the East End.

“Our vision is to create a modern luncheonette featuring all of the classics, new takes on old favorites, great salads, and a kids’ menu with healthy choices,” according to a public statement issued by Mr. Kuperschmid. “Our proposed renovation will include a stylish new counter with swivel stools, all new kitchen equipment, furniture and floors, and an update of the interior space. We will provide excellent food at modest prices in a fresh, clean space. We live in the community and want to create something great for all to enjoy.”

Town officials released a revised request for proposals on January 20 after receiving little interest in two previous RFPs, in October and December.

In the most recent RFP, the town removed a stipulation that whomever won the bid would pay $7,500 per month as a base rent or 10 percent of their gross income, according to Assistant Town Attorney Kara Bak. The golf course is owned by both Southampton and East Hampton towns.

Ms. Schermeyer and Ms. Bak said the town will evaluate the proposals by February 21. A contract is expected to be awarded on February 22, according to Ms. Bak.

Another publication (located near Long Wharf Sag Harbor) has quoted Mr. Nuzzi:

“Considering all the back and forth, and all the changes that we made to [the proposal], I’m a little surprised we only got two,” said Southampton Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi. “But, I’m encouraged that in these tough economic times there are people out there who want to [help] the community.”

Is Mr. Nuzzi brain-dead? Only two proposals for a "Loser Take All" deal?. ...more

PS -- Maybe Mr. Nuzzi, The Troika (which crammed Kratoville down our throats), and Anna -- "I received no phone calls before/during/after Linda Kabot was arrested for DWI" -- Throne-Holst, and Bridget Fleming can explain their complicity in this multi-year SNAFU?

fingers crossed for Dan... but you know that Wankel has lots of tricks up his sleeve. This whole saga started with his under-the-table deal to boot Dan last year

Spring is truly in the air and talk about Poxy is back. Just great that they removed the 7,500 per month price tag to see what real interest is out there. Great business move lets get some interest and talk price later. Why don't you sit down with Dan and LISTEN to what "your" property might be worth isnstead of guessing. Rumor has it that the rent there was about 3,500 per month. By leaving it vacant we the taxpayers have lost around 60,000 in revenue and more in golf activity that was unsuported ...more

Gunnar Myers runs a great restaurant. Loved Napeague Stretch in Amagansett. A modern luncheonette is perfect for the space. Save me a seat at the counter!
