Sag Harbor Man Caught With Illegally Modified Rifle After Shooting Rooster

Nov 5, 2013 12:09 PM

A 45-year-old Sag Harbor man was arrested early Sunday morning after authorities said he shot and killed a rooster at a Sagaponack farm with an illegally modified rifle.

Jameson Ellis, 45, was arrested by Southampton Town Police at approximately 8:35 a.m. after they stopped him on Sagaponack Main Street in Sagaponack Village for having an expired inspection sticker, a violation. The officer who pulled him over then noticed a box of .22-caliber bullets and a rifle inside his Subaru.

Upon being questioned by the officer and asked where he was coming from, Mr. Ellis responded: “I just left Foster Farm. I shot the rooster in the back of [the] car.” He did not offer a motivation in his comments to police, according to the report.

After finding the dead rooster in the back of Mr. Ellis’s car, the officer then discovered that the rifle in the back seat was equipped with an illegal silencer, according to police.

Mr. Ellis was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and prohibited use of a firearm for rifle hunting on Long Island, a misdemeanor.

Officers transported Mr. Ellis to police headquarters in Hampton Bays, and he was arraigned Monday morning in Southampton Town Justice Court. He posted $1,000 bail.

Perhaps a very hungry man?!! Not a good idea no matter what the motivation. King Kullen has them for less than $4. Raise your own for free. He's wishing the latter at this juncture, I'm sure.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. As a proponent of 2nd amendment rights clowns like this give responsible and law abiding gun owners a black eye and ammo (pardon the pun0 to the left wing types who would desecrate our Bill of Rights.

In reading this I just realized that I have not heard my neighbors rooster in a while. Maybe this guy was over here... If so thank you. That rooster was annoying.
