Firefighters Battle Blaze On Reservation

Aug 9, 2012 9:07 AM

UPDATE, 3:10 p.m.

Southampton Fire Department Chief Rodney “Chip” Pierson said the one-story house at 80 Montauk Highway was “pretty much gutted on the inside.”

The fire started in one of the bedrooms and traveled to the adjoining rooms, he said. He estimated the house is about 1,000 square feet.

“When we got there, we started an exterior defensive attack, meaning we put it out from the outside since the inside was too far gone,” he said.

Chief Pierson said the blaze was a relatively smaller type of fire, “but any time you lose a house it’s a bad thing,” he said. “It got going pretty quick on us. We arrived four minutes from dispatch, that’s really quick. The fire had a lot of fuel.”

The chief said he does not know the cause of the fire but that the Southampton Town Fire Marshal’s office is investigating. He could not say whether arson was suspected.

The call for the fire came in at approximately 11:15 a.m., and the blaze was under control by noon. Chief Pierson said the units were picked up at 1:30 p.m., also the time Montauk Highway was reopened.

In addition to the Southampton Fire Department, the North Sea Fire Department stood by at Southampton’s headquarters, and the Hampton Bays Fire Department responded with a routine rapid intervention team (RIT)—a team dedicated solely to search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. The Sag Harbor Fire Department also responded with a RIT once Hampton Bays was called into service. Chief Pierson said help was brought in for extra man power because of the heat and the time of day—it is difficult for volunteers to leave work, he said.

“I want to thank all our surrounding departments for the helping hand,” he said. “It’s great to know we have neighbors that would come out.”

UPDATE, 1:11 p.m.

The fire at the residence, which was first reported as a mattress fire but then spread, has been extinguished by firefighters.

There were no injuries. A resident of the home came home to discover the fire but quickly fled the home and called firefighters.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The Southampton fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Original Story:

Volunteers with the Southampton Fire Department were battling a blaze at a residence on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation late Tuesday morning, just behind the smoke shops on Montauk Highway.

In addition to the Southampton department, the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance, State Police and Shinnecock Tribal Security responded to the scene just after 11 a.m.

Details are sketchy at this time.

So sorry for the loss of this home.

Hmmm, did the three deleted comments have anything in common? The question they asked has probably been on the minds of many here, and is ripe for debate in a better forum IMO.

Good work by the firefighters to knock this down so quickly, and thanks to the other FD teams for their assistance.

Sad day out here. It hurts to see how this house was ravaged. We pray for our tribal members that lost their home yesterday...

The Shinnecocks get free everything from our goverment including free education and welfare. Volunteers come to their rescue to put out a fires bring ambulances when they are sick, and bring law enforcement for disputes. The shinnecocks shoot at us for clamming call us bad people and have a total disrespect for our rules and laws, Not to mention the millions in tax revenues they steal from NY State for the sale of cigarettes. Now they think they are entitled to a casino by some weird entitlement. ...more

wow - now tell us how you really feel!! I love how you immediately tried to back track after you sent that with the post below. . .

Yes, there are some on the reservation who cause problems, and there seems to be a real lack of leadership but what ridiculous ignorant bigotted statements you make with that wide fat brush of yours.

And you're right - those indians have been given SOOOO much by the government, it's amazing that they aren't all successful businessmen / sarcasm. ...more

You don't take anything from the government? I gues you only drive on private roads. You won't accept Social Security when it is time, when you wake at 3am with chest pains you wont call for a publicly funded ambulance either i am sure. You never used the beaches ( cleaned by public employees) You didnt go to school, ( am damn sure not English or grammar class).
Now I am sure you are busy getting ready to assist in some function at th ambulance barn or fire dpepartment where you volunteer, ...more

The only ignorant statement is you putting me in the WE catergory. Does that mean white man taking land in the 1600's? Sorry I wasn't here then neither were any of the citizens at the reservation. Stop with the politically correct BS no one is out to get the Shinnecocks and that includes me.

I have $100,000 in student loans, my education wasn't free so sthu. oh by the way I filed taxes every year since I was 15. Stop with the ignorance. One more thing, we have tribal members that are volunteer firefighters & ambulance, police officers, teachers, lawyers, in the health field and 99.99% of our tribal members don't shoot at people and are just as angry about the incident, so stop being ignorant in a world where you have every opportunity not to be.

The previous comment I wrote is not aimed at all Shinnecoks because most are good people and I dont mean to generalize. I think people shoulfd help the family if they have no where to live and I feel very bad for them because Im sure they have no insurance. But citizens of the reservation have to understand this is 2012 and not 1850 and people are here to help not hurt native Americans. The proof is by what the govermnet has done for them. It is time they stop treating the average American as the ...more
