Southampton Village resident Susan Stevenson was appointed to the Village Historic Preservation and Architectural Review Board last week.

Ms. Stevenson replaces former member Esther Paster, who resigned from the ARB in the fall. Ms. Stevenson will serve the remainder of Ms. Paster’s three-year term, which expires June 30, 2017. She will officially begin as a board member at her first meeting on Monday night.

Ms. Stevenson is a retired editor who worked for Woman’s Day and Ambiance magazines. She currently works for Janet Borden Inc., an art gallery that specializes in fine art photography, and she is also the treasurer of the Southampton Association.

In an email this week, Ms. Stevenson said she was “very excited and grateful” for the opportunity to serve as a public official in the village. She believes her separation from the real estate and building industries will allow her to “serve as an impartial and informed guardian of our little village,” she added.

“As a long-term resident, and as someone who has regularly attended meetings of the trustees and the ARB over the last five years, my aim is that we protect [the] unique character of Southampton Village while also acknowledging that development is a legitimate aspect of growth and enterprise,” Ms. Stevenson wrote. “I believe we need to keep a watchful eye on historic buildings and districts that deserve protection. That is, after all, one aspect of our mandate.”

The Southampton Village Board announced Ms. Stevenson’s appointment at a special meeting on Wednesday, December 30, after several weeks of sifting through applications and interviewing candidates.

“We vetted many candidates for the seat, from a variety of backgrounds,” Mayor Mark Epley said. “I think she will be a fair and dedicated member of the ARB.”
